Well not sure what this other piece is you're speaking of, but the shop I came from before with about a 70,000 desktop base left SMS2003 for patching as it was way too hit and miss and poorly functioning. They were going to use it for software installs, remote desktop, and inventory overall, but said they would probably move to WSUS instead for patch management. Not sure why, but they never did adopt any other of the high dollar solutions out there either.
