I will be adding two new drives to a ProLiant Raid5 array and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to handle the upgrade in Windows 2000. I've posted this question to the HP forum and received some general guidelines, but want to verify this with the KiX crowd.
At this point the upgrade sounds easy enough:
1. Install the new hard drives 2. Run ACU (Array Config Utility) 3. Add new drives to existing array 4. (at this point the general concensis is to run the Disk Management and extend the logical drive, but there are also recommendation on extending the logical drive with the diskpart.exe utility)
Any suggestions for step #4?

not really, You can use the extend option with Diskpart.exe. But I have never used it.

Well you don't say what controller you have or even what server so difficult to determine the age of the systm.
If you have one with a 5i or better controller then adding and expanding the drive should be fine. 1. Backup the system 2. Make sure you update the FIRMWARE for the Server in question first 3. Update the CONTROLLER firmware and drivers 4. Add the drive 5. Diskpart the drive
If the drives are Dynamic instead of Basic then there are posts where expanding did not work and the user lost data and had to do a restore of the data.

You sure about that order? I run a DELL server farm and one time I updated the firmware before the driver and regretted it.
Personally, I would never extend a partition. I would image the server, scrub, build a brand new RAID container, and drop the image back onto it. More often than not, I migrate the application/data to another pristine server and then scrub the old one afterwards.

Well in 8 years of working with Compaq (now HP) Servers I've personally never ran into an issue with updating the Server firmware first, but hey I know where you're coming from as sometimes some unexpected things do popup in computing.
Actually, I was talking about the RAID firmware but I did get in trouble one time upgrading the ESM before the RAID. I even tested the procedure on an identical dev box before trying it on the prod box. You know how it is... shit happens.
