hi all,

We've made a deal here with IBM and they're going to start rolling in with their products, processes and solutions. I'll probably be most affected by Tivoli (using SMS now), but i'm sure there will be other new tools I'll have to start using as well.

I'm just wondering if any one here at korg has had a similar experience with IBM that they'd like to share. Very curious of how well (or poorly for that matter) this transformation will go in reality.

My uncle worked for IBM back in 1983. My recollection as an eight year old was, "Big Computers". (I'm sure that's not helpful info though... )

My sympathies. I am going through a similar situation with Dell (though we are getting rid of Tivoli for SMS).

But if someone tells you that the Tivoli client and the SMS agent can coexist nicely on a system, don't believe them. A few years ago, we tried to use Tivoli to remove SMS. Our Microsoft TAM and a rep from IBM both told us there should be no problem. The results were not pretty. Dozens of hung systems and desktop visits ensued. Oops!

Very encouraging thanks Jim. How well did Tivoli work for you? Right now our SMS infrastructure is solid and from the demos we've seen on Tivoli, the product doesn't seem to compare. We're worried that Tivoli just isn't going to get it done for us without a lot of tweaking.

Is there a Tivoli community out there anywhere (besides IBM's site)? Thanks again for the input.

There is a Tivoli section in the myITforum, but it only have 15 topics with 32 replies. Any chance of talking them into keeping SMS (at least as a backup management solution)?

yeah the last post out on myitforum is mine. Before that, the last one was december of '04.

As far as keeping sms around, that's a negative. The politics of the situation far out weigh the logic. As a co-worker put it, we really can't stop the $420 million dollar locomative - just have to jump on board. So we'll have to take a nice big step backward and then try to get back to where we are now - it's going to be a blast i'm sure.
