I thought I would try the Kixtart community to see if anyone could understand my question and not point me in the wrong direction. (Microsoft tech on Google Groups reference)

Anyway, I have a fresh install of SMS 2003SP1 on a Windows 2003SP1 server. Everything is working great on the server. I'm trying to install the Administrator Console on my WinXPSP2 workstation. After installing the console I attempt to connect to the SMS site database and I get an error of, "database does not exist".

I went to the SMS server to check permissions. My account was in the SMS Admins group on the server (this should have been all I needed) but I wasn't connecting. For fun I placed my user account into the Local Administrators group on the SMS server and I could connect. This is a work-around, but it is not going to work as a solution in my environment where I have two other staff members who will need to Administrator Console on their computers. I don't want to grant them local Admin rights on the SMS server.

I have my XPSP2 firewall turned off. The Windows2003SP1 server has the firewall disabled. This is obviously a permissions issue, but so far, Microsoft has no resolution for this issue. I've also granted my user account dbowner permissions on the SQL server seperate from granting my account local admin rights. That didn't work. The only thing that works so far is granting my account Local Admin rights.

Does anyone have a solution or has heard of a solution?

Ugh.... Matthew

Have you looked at DCOM perms? I don't have SMS 2k3 but with SMS 2 at least, XP needs the perms tweaked.

Thank you for the recommendation. I have already made that change but it did not resolve my issue.

Although this is a great board, the best SMS board out there is MyITForum. Do a search out there on the SMS 2003 board and if you don't find the answer, post the question. You'll probably get more input there than here

Thanks, but I've also tried all those too. Infact, my system already had the correctly configured DCOM and WMI settings and my firewall is turned off. I found some Q articles that I'm hoping will lead me to victory........

SOLUTION FOUND!! Here's the solution from Brian (bluzier) from myitforum.com

Quote:

Ok, it looks like we may finally have the solution. I opened up a case with MS and this is what they came up with that works:

Upon research I found that Windows 2003 SP1 creates a local group called ‘Distributed COM Users’ which has all rights for Com security. Please add your low user rights accounts to ‘Distributed COM Users’ group on SQL server in order to make the connection.

I've done this and it does work. I guess this local group has more rights than individually modifying the DCOM permissions. Not sure, but just glad it works.

One More Thing: You will also need to modify COM permissions to successfully run the Web reporting tool from your remote SMS Administrator Console.

To use remote SMS Administrator Console

1. Add remote administrators to the %smsserver%\Distributed COM Users group
2. Run dcomcnfg.exe>Component Services>Computers>My Computer>Properties>COM Security TAB> 'Launch and Activation Permissions' "Edit Defaults" Button
3. ADD Distributed COM Users group and grant: Local Launch, Remote Launch, Local Activation, and Remote Activation
