thanks for that. upon reading the MS article is looks as if the limitation may be with KiXtart - sort of

"This process should take two separate code paths depending on whether you are running Windows NT or Windows 95. In Windows 95, you will want to add the printer driver with AddPrinterDriver() and add the printer connection with AddPrinter(). In Windows NT, you need only call the AddPrinterConnection() function"

The nice thing about NT/2000 is that, according to the article, these OS will download the driver from the server.

I have come across a posting that shows how to use sendkeys to set up the printer with 9x but it's pretty dodgy and I don't think I want to take that approach.
