Folks,

I have read many times that functions such as AddPrinterConnection are available only on WinNT/2000 but I haven't seen an explanation as to why ?

Is this a short coming of KiXtart or a limitation of the 9x platform

Mark,

I'm not a Win9x guy - but here is my take on that.

Ruud has a habit of naming his KiXtart commands/functions after the Win32 API used to implement them. There is an API called AddPrinterConnection that is available only for NT/2000/XP but is NOT SUPPORTED for 95/98/Me ... I imagine that this is the reason ...

Microsoft goes on to explain the printe specific differences between OS's in this Q-Article:

HOWTO: Add a Network Printer Connection

There's even some code there if someone feels ambitious. Plus, if memory serves, I think I've seen other members post solutions to this using the rundll thingy

Shawn,

thanks for that. upon reading the MS article is looks as if the limitation may be with KiXtart - sort of

"This process should take two separate code paths depending on whether you are running Windows NT or Windows 95. In Windows 95, you will want to add the printer driver with AddPrinterDriver() and add the printer connection with AddPrinter(). In Windows NT, you need only call the AddPrinterConnection() function"

The nice thing about NT/2000 is that, according to the article, these OS will download the driver from the server.

I have come across a posting that shows how to use sendkeys to set up the printer with 9x but it's pretty dodgy and I don't think I want to take that approach.

Rgds

It's not only Kixtart, we use the Microsoft Con2Prt.exe which only works on NT/2K/Xp too.

There are some VBS scripts in the Win2K Reskit or included with XP (%Windir%\System32\pr*.vbs) which may help. It's a problem which I've meant to look into but never got round to.
