Be careful if you do unattended installs as the network is not started until the (new) firewall is configured - unless you deal with it in a transform / answer file.

This may cause problem with remote installs as well.

Applying the SP to an existing install doesn't have the problem - it's new slipstreamed installs that will be an issue.

Aside from the Firewall issues, anyone else got any "gotchas" or tried installing it yet?

Went in without a hitch on my ISA 2K4 server. I got real brave and installed it through an RDP session.

Only installed on one Server and the firewall is disabled.

The Help and Support link was not functioning - the service was not installed even a re-install of pchealth.inf did not repair it. Had to manually add the service back in. Not sure what actually removed it in the first place.

Not sure how many of you work in small business environments like I do, but it appears Microsoft has removed SP1 for Small Business Server 2003 because of some issues... and instead will be releasing a SBS2003 SP1...

Windows Small Business Server 2003
and Windows Server 2003 SP1
Known Issues
Microsoft Corporation
Published: April 2005
Version: 1

Overview
Although Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for public distribution, it is recommended that you wait to install this service pack until Service Pack 1 for Windows SBS is released.

This document describes the top known issues that you might encounter when installing Windows Server 2003 SP1 on the Microsoft® Windows® Small Business Server 2003 server software (Windows SBS).

If you have already installed Windows Server 2003 SP1, it is not necessary to uninstall the service pack as it is a prerequisite to installing Windows SBS SP1. However, if you must uninstall Windows Server 2003 SP1 to address a known issue, you will be required to reinstall the service pack when you install Windows SBS SP1 once it becomes available.

Known Issues
The Remote Access Wizard fails to create a Connection Manager configuration package after installing Windows Server 2003 SP1
If you run the Remote Access Wizard after installing Windows Server 2003 SP1, you will receive an error when the wizard attempts to create the Connection Manager configuration package file. To correct this problem, uninstall Windows Server 2003 SP1, and then run the Remote Access Wizard again.

To uninstall Windows Server 2003 SP1

Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, select Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, and then click Remove.
In the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Removal Wizard, click Next to uninstall the service pack.
To run the Remote Access Wizard

If necessary, open Server Management by clicking Start, and then clicking Server Management.
In the console tree, click Internet and E-mail.
In the details pane, click Configure Remote Access.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the wizard.
Note

This problem is corrected in Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1 when it becomes available.
The Change Server IP Address tool fails after installing Windows Server 2003 SP1
The Change Server IP Address tool fails to change the IP address of your server after installing Windows Server 2003 SP1 on a computer running Windows SBS. To correct this problem, uninstall Windows Server 2003 SP1, and then run the Change Server IP Address tool again. After you have done this, run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard to ensure that your networking settings are configured correctly.

To run the Change Server IP Address tool

If necessary, open Server Management by clicking Start, and then clicking Server Management.
In the console tree, click Internet and E-mail.
In the details pane, click Change Server IP Address.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the wizard.
To run the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard

If necessary, open Server Management by clicking Start, and then clicking Server Management.
In the console tree, click Internet and E-mail.
In the details pane, click Connect to the Internet.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the wizard.
Note

This problem is corrected in Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1 when it becomes available.
If you uninstall Windows Server 2003 SP1 from a computer running Windows SBS, the Fax service does not start and the Fax Configuration Wizard fails to complete
To correct this problem, use the registry editor Regedit.exe to modify the registry entry that is causing the problem.

Caution

Incorrectly editing the registry can severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data that is stored on the computer.
To open the registry editor, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
In the registry editor, select the following key:
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Telephony\Country List

Right-click the entry CountryListVersion, and then click Modify.
Change the Value data field to 0, and then click OK.
Close the registry editor and restart the computer.
After the computer restarts, click Start, and then click Server Management.
In Server Management, click the Fax node, and then click Configure Fax Services.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the wizard.

Yes, SBS 2003 will have it's own SP1 later on. Do NOT try to install this SP1 on an SBS!

Another really useful feature (besides the firewall) is Access-based Directory Enumeration

But does it repair or still break DHCP like Glenn experienced when he updated to SP1?

@NTDOC, I must admit that I've never heard of that DHCP problem anywhere else... (and I'm active at a .se it-pro forum with alot of consultants and sysadmins).

That's good, however it does make one quite leary as there probably is no way to UNINSTALL SP1 on Server 2003. Which would mean a complete restore, or rebuild.

In Glenn's case it was an easy quick rebuild, but in a production environment that could be a nightmare if you happened to be the unlucky one that was unable to repair it.

Did see a problem with 2003 SP-1 under RIS. Wound up running 2003 Standard with no SP. Do know that there is a new program you can use called SECWIZ.EXE (something like this - I would have to go through my TechNet notes) that takes you through different scenarios for the server.

@kdyer, the new Security Wizard is a "replacement" for the security templates earlier available. A guide to help you lock down your server based on server roles.

Indeed

Another cool thing about SBS 2003 Premium SP1 is that they throw in ISA server 2004 for free!

Update... Just getting ready to do my first install of SBS SP1... and found this wonderful nugget of information...

Quote:

Before you can install Windows SBS SP1, the following updates must be installed on the server:

Service Pack 1 for the Windows Server® 2003 operating system
Windows SharePoint® Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment(*)

900MB of downloads!

I thought the idea of having a SBS was to make it easy for small businesses to run the server. How many small businesses, who do their own computer work, do you think will actually go through all this? (Windows Update doesn't do this automatically for them either)

LOL yeah, and how many have the bandwidth to get the 900MB without impacting their network and Internet access.

Most won't have someone there at night to download it after hours.
