Philips Progressive-Scan DVD Player with DivX, MPEG-4 and DVD+R/+RW Playback

This thing does it all; plays DVD, DVD+R/+RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3-CD, MPEG-4, Picture-CD and DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x

The most cool feature of this is that you can just copy a mpg or divx avi to a cd or dvd recordable, any it will play it... no remastering or menu building necessary.

The next greatest feature of this DVD player is that it costs about $65.00-$70.00

I dl'ed a few 'sample' videos, burned them to a blank dvd+r, and the player cued up the list and played them just fine

btw, you burned them to dvd+r...
k, I can understand that but for me the only point to buy such a drive would be that I don't need to buy dvd writer.

btw, recording and capturing HDTV...
can't believe it being true before I can see it in action.
proper resolution for hdtv should be quite a resource hog.

Actually it is not all that hard to do. Since a HD broadcast (720p or 1080i) is digital in nature to begin with, so to capture a HD stream is very easy and takes very little CPU cycles to do.

Then again, to capture a NON HD broadcast (480i) can take a LOT of CPU cycles, since the capture stream needs to be converted from a analog broadcast to a digital format mpeg2 through some type of mpeg2 encoder. But, there are now consumer mpeg2 hardware encoders on the market that make capturing an analog broadcast a simple process, and cpu usage will never rise above 5% even when performing multiple 480i capture at the some time. These hardware encoders can be bought for $100 or less.

The majority of CPU cycles are going to be spent on decoding the MPEG2 steam that was captured. And yes the HD mpeg2 streams do contain more information Vs. a SD mpeg2 stream

The 720p and 1080i HD streams do contain a lot more information than a 480i SD stream, but decoding a 720p or 1080i stream using a modern PC is not hard to do, and a good video card really helps in this area, also your choice of what mpeg2 decoder to use can play a HUGE roll in over all picture quality and CPU cycles used..

But even a $50 card like the Nividia fx5200 on a p4 2.4mhz can process and display a 720p or 1080i signal and only use about 50% of the CPU. A bigger video card would lower this CPU usage.

The big thing when dealing with HD streams is hard drive space... you needs LOTS of it!! A 720p or 1080i HD stream can come in at 9gigs an hour. For comparison a 480i SD broadcast uses about 3gigs an hour.

Bryce

PS, i should be getting in the mail today or tomorrow my vga > component transcoder. With this i will be able to output a 1080i picture from my media pc into my 34" HDTV basically a HUGE freaking monitor!! So with my wireless mouse and KB i can surf the web from the couch , but the majority of the media pc’s use will be running Media Center 2005.

well.. yes.

but the Media PC stuff has become a hobby... and i really needed a new TV...

Nothing more satifying than hearing complaints that my TV is to big and it is making the complainer "dizzy"

I came home ther other day and she was watching a HD channel, she even said that the new tv has a really nice picture.

The most important consideration when buying a hardware MPEG-4 player is the chipset (which should be the latest Sigma Designs chip), and the manufacturers ability to perform good software/firmware updates. The commmon XviD-standard in constantly updated, and even the newest player doesn't handle all the features of the XviD standard "advanced simple profile" (Global Motion Compensation etc). Then there's the issue of Progressive Scan. Many manufacturers doesn't specify which outputs they've got PS on. Most often i¨t's just the VGA-connector, which is useless either way.

The KiSS player is a good player though. But it's all still first-generation products. The big advantage of a hardware player is the image quality of MPEG-4 material. The Sigma-chip outperforms any HTPC by miles. the you could of course buy the chip on a PCI-card instead

I hope your computer room is a step up from the living room and not some cold, dark, dusty, half-finished basement.

Now i can play my games with out getting strange looks.... since i use voice software to talk to me fellow gamers, and all the others see is me talking to my computer.... they just dont understand.

all i need now is a 7.1 sound system for my new computer...

well... you can call it a HTPC if you want because that is the roll that it is preforming. But the comptuer i am using started life out as a desktop computer in some company office.

It is a Dell Dimension p4 2.4 small form factor desktop PC. (This was Free)
I have done the following.

 • removed the floppy, and put a 80gig HD in its place. (old extra HD)
 • replaced the CDROM with a DVD-Burner. ($200)
 • Added 1 Hauppage pvr250, 1 avermedia m150 video tuner cards. (~$250)
 • replaced the videocard with a Chaintech fx5200 nvidia ($50)
 • Added a vga to component transcoder to display a 720p resolution on my hdtv. ($120)
 • i have a ATI HD-Wonder that was in the system, but not at the moment. This is the card that recorded the hidef recordings of LOST used for the last two screencaps above. When I rebuild into a bigger case, this card will be going back in. (gift from boss)
 • Added the Microsoft Media Center Remote ($40)
 • Installed Microsoft Media Center 2005 ($130 i think)
• Nvidia nvdvd codecs ($20)
 • Powerstrip to get 720p video timing into the hdtv ($30)
Over all it has been something that I have been working on for the last year or so now. the move to MCE2005 just happend about 5 months ago. Before MCE2005 I was running Beyond TV. I switched because of preformance issues with beyond tv, bugs, and crashes.

I had my sister and her little boy over friday. I put in the DVD Monsters Inc. for her little boy to watch. She made the comment "Wow! we have this same dvd but it looks nothing like that!... look you can see each hair!" I think that they will be getting a hdtv soon
