I've implemented a logon script that works fine for Windows 2000. Windows XP gives a problem. I have changed the GPO to Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon. I have also added SyncForegroundPolicy to the registry where directed to do so by other sites. No Joy. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It must be the way you are calling KiX from the GPO script. I have tested GPO scripts on W2k AD and XP client and posted the results to this board.

I am using the User Configuration|Windows Settings|Scripts (Logon/Logoff) with the Name of KIX32.EXE and pararmeter THC.KIX. Should I be using a Batch file to call the executable?

I have only tested by launching KiX from a BATch file.

Is there any way to troubleshoot the XP to see where it is failing? Is it the Server or Workstation? Is the workstation needing additional settings? etc

What's the exact problem you're having? Hard to troubleshoot the default 'it doesn't work' description. Can you post script here?

I doubt it has anything to do with the script. My guess is the script is not even found. Is there a particular reason why you would not use a BATch file and code in the full path to the script?

I have put the batch file in the SYSVOL share and also the script. The results are the same. 2000 is go and XP is nogo.

Yes there is a reason not to use a batch file. A batch file leaves an UGLY console window open while it is running.

NT/2000/XP don't require a batch file.

However, in this case I think using a batch file for testing might help you to find the problem.

@ECHO OFF
ECHO Temporary Logon Test
PAUSE

Run that with a test account for both 2000/XP and it should at least let you know that it finds the batch file.

Make sure it is in the NETLOGON share and that all users have read access to this share, which it would by default unless someone altered it after creation.

DOC,
What do you know? I thought you don't run GPO scripts?

THe BATch file goes into the \\mydomain.com\SYSVOL\mydomain.com\Policies\{8F913AA1-...GPO}\User\Scripts\Logon\ folder. You can put KiX scripts and executables anywhere you want, but I prefer to put it in a folder under Netlogon and then use full paths in the BATch file to launch it.

It works for me. How hard can it be?

There was no NETLOGON share. I had implemented logon scripts with NT4 at my last employer using the NETLOGON share and set the script in the User Manager. Our current server being W2k, I assumed that the lack of a NETLOGON folder was by design when using Group Policy. However, the server is in Mixed Mode (2000 and NT Support) so the lack of a Netlogon folder is curious to say the least. I never thought about that.

Creating a NETLOGON folder and sharing it allows neither the W2k nor the WXP machines to work. Any ideas?

BTW DOC, the BATch file does not show a console, so there goes your theory.

Kerndog,
Did you search for and find where I posted step by step instructions? Did you try providing the full path in the BATch file?

I have looked and not had any success. To be fair I am not sure I am searching for the right terms.

When the script the KIX32.exe and the BATch file were in the ...Sysvol\DomainName\Policies\UniqueIdentifier\Users\Scripts\Logon directory the W2k machines could run the BATch alone or the KIX32.EXE with script as the parameter from GPO. The BATch file did not contain the full path to the script and it worked fine for W2k. I followed instructions on
http://www.kixtart.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB10&Number=111153&Forum=UBB10&Words=GPO&Match=And&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=111153&Search=true#Post111153
for configuring the WXP test machine.

Well, you can keep staring at your XP scrren wondering why it cannot find it without the complete path, or you could supply the complete path. You could also post to an XP forum why it behaves differently from W2k, or accept that it does and move on.

As I said, I have tested with XP and it works for me. Why will you not try with a full path? What more can I say?

I did find the following and made the appropriate changes without success.

Since you store KiX32.exe and the script in \NetLogon, you will have to call it explicitly from there with your BATch file from the GPO Scripts folder. On my OU,I have a GPO logon script as follows:
\\MyCompany.com\SYSVOL\MyCompany.com\Policies\{8F913AA1-8559-40E6-893C-776A5EF68637}\User\Scripts\Logon\Logon.bat

Within your logon.bat, you will have to do something like:
\\MyCompany.com\Netlogon\KiX32.exe \\MyCompany.com\Netlogon\MyScript.kix

I am assuming that this is not what you are talking about when you say step by step. What terms would I search for to find the step by step instructions?

That pretty much sums it up. You said though, that you don't have a \NetLogon share, so my example would not work, even if you changed the domain name.

Also, you said you were mixed mode so YMMV.

Sorry

I still love and prefer using aspects of the Legacy Les.

But I'll butt out now and let you help Kerndog get going the way of the GPO which is probably better for most.

Here is the latest:
I have added the following to the GPO and to the contents of the logon.bat as absolute paths to the necessary files.

\\My Company\SYSVOL\My Company\Policies\{E4124428-4956-482B-A173-F766DF040027}\User\Scripts\Logon\

WXP still does not start the script. I can use explorer to browse to the directory above and launch the script but for some inexplicable reason the scripts do not start automatically. Am I perpaps missing a registry key to get WXP to look for a logon script? TIA.
