I'm trying to uncompile a kixtart exe that a former worker wrote so we can re-write it to point to a new server.

Can anyone tell me how I go about the uncompile?

you sure he wrote the kixtart.exe?
what does the file's version field say?

and, if it's not SFX archive, you can't "uncompile"

There is no compiler for KiX, only packagers. Generally, the packagers just unpackage to the %temp% folder where the "source" can be easily ripped.

well, depending on the version of crypter used, it might not be that hard.
but, if the dude has made it as it is and has got fired, I might consider it not good practice decrypting that code.

He hasn't gotten fired, just moved onto another job in the company. BTW, the wkixcrpt.exe that was used is dated 4/23/2002.

hey, have you asked if he has the original source?
coders as well as scripters tend to keep their work as "life-insurance" of somekind.
2002...
if the script is executing longer than just seconds, you could be able to see the file in temp-folder.
get yourself filemon.exe and run the exe. this way you see where he puts the script on "unpackaging"

Put delete inhibit on the temp folder and it should stay even after the script finishes.

geez.. those sysyadmins that put passwords in their scripts are gonna hate me.

I tried that.
at least with newer kixcrypt versions it does not work.
seems like kixcrypt tries to first create empty file and then delete it before writing the actual script there.

Good news! I asked our server administrator to restore the original code from backups and he was able to do so!!
Now I have the original kix file that the exe was generated from. Crisis over! Thanks to all who contributed!!

so, did you or did you not ask from the writer of the code?

even though kix is freeware, the code written is not.
it's personally owned by the coder if not stated otherwise.
