Great, glad to hear you were able to find a solution. That's always good.

I will have to agree with Lonkero though in that the longer you keep finding the magic to keep them Windows 9x boxes being supported, the longer they will remain there.

Management wanted a lot more things done in the logon script that were easy to do for NT and up, but a real pain for 9x. Finally I just told them that they had to make a decision... either really get rid of the Windows 9x or don't get the new functionality they wanted.

They chose to quit support for Windows 9x. Now I only have to maintain code for NT and above. Even that has now changed were down to about 20+ NT 4 boxes. Everything else is 2000/XP and coding is much easier to maintain now.

Best wishes on killing off your 9x systems as soon as possible, it will make your job a lot easier.

It'll cost several million dollars to replace the 9x machines, money I can't just say "spend now", especially because IT isnt' in charge of individual boxes, departments are.

We've given them their deadlines, hopefully they'll step up and do it, otherwise we will be unplugging them.

I love IT, and I totally agree with you guys, but some companies don't make these kinds of things simple. It's often easy to convince and get buyin here, it's something else to set a timeline.

Heck, the server migrations we're doing now have been going on for 2 years

well, sure.
but first question is, how you have that amount of win9x machines there?
it's the IT to blame in the first place!

it was already said around 1998 that only one 9x model comes out and then it's dead end.
it was clear already back then that those systems did not sit properly in networked environment.
so, I need to say, the silly boss that approved them is the one to blame.
the loose IT rules are to blame.
it's the shortsighted IT personel to blame.
it's the world economy to blame.

and, finally it's probably my fault as I didn't come and rescue your IT-dept in time
