I was wondering if there are sample script out there that utilizes Kixtart to backup files/folders on a workstation/server then send an email notification once done. I searched but wasn't able to find anything. Thanks in advnce.

Did you look for NTBACKUP in your search?

@FileName.bks

You can then use the MAILER() UDF to e-mail/page when complete.

Is there a way for ntbackup to return a value to indicate failure or success? Using that value I can email the user whether the backup was successful. Thx.

for proper info about success/failure you should check the log though.

I use NTBACKUP and some scripts that email me the results.

For the most part it is OK, but be aware that if it halts for any reason it can be a pain to get going again.

I have two recommendations based on my experience:

1) Make sure that you allow NTBACKUP to interact with the console if you are running it as a background job. If it stops waiting for a tape subsequent attempts will just fail silently and without error.

2) If you are running the backup as a scheduled task, run another independant task at a time that the backup *should* have finished. This task should email you if the backup has not completed, so that you can deal with it.
