I have a Win2K AD environment with roaming profiles and a re-directed start menu.

Problem is there's only one start menu and several different configurations on machines [5 different configurations at the moment]. My users see all installed applications on thier start menu's, more and more of which don't work.

I wondered if there were any way to assign a start menu to the groups of machines. I currently use Kix32 to attach printers, and the PC's are named by thier location (ie. R09-xx, R19-xx etc.).

Thanks

Mark

Hello Mark and welcome to the board.

Should be able to do it. Perhaps a little odd, but you can place computers into GROUPS in an OU and I would guess then that you could do an IF InGroup('some group') DO SOME CODE EndIf

Hmmm.... Okay I take that back. Don't think that will work as the InGroup is not designed for that.

But using some ADSI code you could check for that and then based upon the return results you could then perform some other task in KiX.

Thanks for that prompt reply NTDOC.

I've never come across putting computers into groups before. That opens up a whole new level of control! I'm commonly asked, for example, to exclude rooms from internet access. I presume that this'll work as it's a deny which then takes precedence over any allow! Cool!

I cobbled together [with help!] a script to assign printers to rooms... what i'm saying is I'm a noob

I don't understand what your saying. Can you give me more detail pls?

Thanks a lot

Mark

No wait - the printer script uses ifmember so presumably I can do the same thing here.

But what's the syntax for redirecting the start menu?? I have no idea... been searching around but haven't come across a textural command yet...

We redirect our start menu. Here is the Kixtart code

Code:
; Set path to Shortcuts located on C: Drive
$shortcutpath="c:\pc"
$returncode=writevalue("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment","shortcutpath","$shortcutpath","REG_SZ")
