I have a network with a Windows 2000 Server. The clients have Windows 2000 Pro and Windows 98 SE.

On the Win 2000 Pro computers we use a kix-script with the addprinterconnection function. Now I have tried this on Windows 98 too, but it won`t work. I don`t get a directly error-message, but at the end of the command "120" appears and nothing more happens. And the printer is not installed.

In the remarks of the script I read the following:
"This function is available only on Windows NT or higher, and can be used only to connect to printers on a server running under Windows NT or higher."

I presume that Windows 98 is below Windows NT and Windows 2000 is above Win NT. So that may be the explanation why it doesn`t work on the Windows 98 clients?

I have also searched for alterntives, and tried a Visual Basic script, but it seems like it won`t work on Windows 98.

So; Is there anyone that may have a solution on my problem?
I really want to get the printer be installed in the logon script...

Try this -

Add Printer on 9x clients!

Have not used it, but looks like it would work for your application.

There is a UDF that more or less manually maps printers on Windows 9x. However, you'd be better off to just get rid of the Windows 9x computers, anyway.

Looks nice. But there wasn`t any explanations to the script.
Now I`ve copied the text from Add Printer on 9x clients! into a *.kix file. Exactly in what lines can I edit to insert the servername and sharename of the printer?

Also the RPS service must run on the server, and the 4 *.dll files must be copied into the 9x client?

RPC (or Remote Procedure Calls) are not handled by Win 9x. You need to run the KXRPC service on your login server(s). The .DLLs are not necessarily copied to the clients, but where you execute KIX32.EXE/WKIX32.EXE from, they definitely have to be there.

On the Addprinter post I added, you need to read-up on how to edit the file. We have gotten rid of our last 9x system about 2 years ago.

I would highly recommend reading the post in the FAQ Section on how to get started with KiXtart.

I`ve printed out KIX2001.doc, but it`s 125 pages. So I`ll need some time to get through it

So I was just wondering if someone could help me with this one since I would like to get the script working pretty soon:
I`ve copied the text from Add printer on 9x clients
into a *.kix file. Exactly in what lines can I edit to insert the servername and sharename of the printer?

the variable names are rather self-explatonary.
if you have trouble with them too, the starters guide indeed should be your next stage.

According to the comments above the actual code, one would have to assume that $newserver and $newprinter would contain the server and printer names fo the new printer share.
