Create a tundra environment in England??? You need to be North of the Tree line for that. Who ever wrote this likes to sensationalize things.

This is not new news.

Have a look at a map of the World and find the UK - check out the latitude. Now have a look at what else is at that latitude. Brrr.

The only reason that we have a temperate climate is because of the sea. The UK is an island group, so the relatively small land mass is warmed and cooled by the surrounding waters.

At present, the Gulf Stream keeps us toasty, but there has been evidence for a while that there are changes going on in the global currents. If we lose the Gulf Stream that would be bad, temperatures would plummet. However, what is worse is that we would start getting the cold water from the North.

We will freeze rapidly, and as the country currently comes to a full stop with just two inches of snow it should bugger the economy right up.

I'd better stock up on firewood before panic buying sets in.

Or you stay where you are and have the tree line move further south by way of a redirected Gulf Stream. Effects of the Gulf Stream extend to as far as the Norwegian fjords such that some of the fjords arely freeze over.

My thoughts on this article,

In the Article they suggest England will have the same weather as Labrador which supposedly has the same latitude. (I thought most of England was South of Labrador but geography was never my strong point.) Yet, I believe that most of Labrador is south of the Tree Line. Labrador is an extra cold part of the world because the Artic current runs south right down the coast. (This is where the Icebergs in the North Atlantic come from.) I thought this was caused by the same giant circulation cell that causes the Gulf Stream. It is all part of 1 giant circle which I thought had to flow in a counter-clockwise direction in the Northern hemisphere. I don’t think the direction of the cell can be changed. It can be disturbed temporally by turbulence and deflected somewhat but the basic cell direction will always remain. If the Gulf Stream moves further away from the English coast or slows down then things will get colder but England will always be somewhat warm for its latitude & Labrador will always be somewhat cold for its latitude.

Some Canadian latitudes, none that I know of with a Tundra environment.

44 Toronto
47 Quebec City
52 Labrador City
53 Edmonton

Some European Latitudes

51 London
55 Glasgow
55 Moscow
59 Stockholm

I think that suggesting that England will become a tundra environment is bad science.
