Certification is more necessary when your boss is sending you to other companies.
Your boss already knows "what you can" and "when he can count on you".
Certification is something which was introduced again by those companies who
want to make money with it. Ones, two or three times the boss find it very useful,
but the fourth time he get a big headache of it.
Also not everybody wants to learn only the MS stuff. Most things we known about
computing aren't based on those certificates, but on our education at school and
on doing it a long time. Just, a paper isn't for us enough (once we meet a person
with CNE and MCSE certificates, but he doesn't see a computer at all). People
should be made of the right stuff.
People with a long computer history knows what is useful and not. So the best
dream is, that you can do your work without a those extrem requirements.
