LOL You can have it if you want. I'm tired of certifying for Microsoft. I'm getting too old and tired of memorizing this stuff and never getting any salary or job promotion for it.

Dear,

Certification is more necessary when your boss is sending you to other companies.
Your boss already knows "what you can" and "when he can count on you".

Certification is something which was introduced again by those companies who
want to make money with it. Ones, two or three times the boss find it very useful,
but the fourth time he get a big headache of it.
Also not everybody wants to learn only the MS stuff. Most things we known about
computing aren't based on those certificates, but on our education at school and
on doing it a long time. Just, a paper isn't for us enough (once we meet a person
with CNE and MCSE certificates, but he doesn't see a computer at all). People
should be made of the right stuff.

People with a long computer history knows what is useful and not. So the best
dream is, that you can do your work without a those extrem requirements.
greetings.

I know my boss knows what I can do...But when higher up mgmt type positions open up...A new employee with all the certs is going to get the position over an existing employee w/out the certs. Here anyways...I dont know about other companies.

I guess the one thing we have going here for us... our new AVP told me her definition of "MCSE" was "Must Call Someone Else". Maybe there's hope for those of us here with experience instead of certs?

Glenn,

You are hitting upon a good subject here as a good "bookworm" would not necessarily be a good person to put to practice their knowledge.

But certs are very welcome on your CV when you become unemployed....

Quite right! We worked with a guy with more letters after his MCSE than anyone I know.. plus his CNE! While he can recite chapter, verse, and "Q" articles by number, he can't actually put it all together in a meaningful way.

I have none of those credentials (only MCP in NT4 and IP) but I've taught MCSE and A+ for several years. I've designed, built, and maintained a 27 site WAN, including an intelligent, automated NOC. No CNE required.

Certs are important, true - but after a few years in the field, they are less important. When I ran my integration business, I used to give applicants a test. There were several sections covering Networking, IP, NetBIOS, and Unix, plus one "essay" section that presented a configuration scenario and asked 10 troubleshooting questions. Those 10 questions told me if the applicant could "think" and apply their knowledge in a "common sense" manner.. the exact answers were less important than the "direction" that the applicant went in answering them. Those that did not complete that section were not considered for the position. I'd rather hire someone that can think than someone that can recite memorized trivia.

The most important lesson I learned in my IBM school days was "Don't memorize the details! Learn the concepts - all the detail you'll ever need are in (these) books when you need it."

Glenn,

Of course you are right but it is not that simple. When you work at the ICT departement of a company certs are less important. I work for an ICT Company who sends me to other companies. I have to deal with managers who don't know me in the first place. They have to made there decission if they want me to work for them after reading my CV. So, In my case Certs are important. I know a lot of people who are "paper" mcse or whatever certification they have and know nothing. The ones who want to work in the IT branche because in the good days the sky was the limit. Since our economy is in a recession those are the ones who has to leave the company at first.
