I have had a look at some of the previous posts on this issue, but I cant seem to find a solution to my particular problem with users able to access files through the recently used lists on word etc.. this key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common\Open Find" seems to be the root of the problem. Can anybody offer me any suggestions

Steve

If you don't want them to access the files you will need to do it via security. You are kidding yourself if you think just removing the entries is going to do it for you.

The keys where the actual entries are stored are all over the place, and change with differenct version of office. You can find them yourself by creating a "sentinel" file in each application and then searching the registry. Here are just a few from my system:

Excel: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\Recent Files
Excel: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open Find\Microsoft Excel\Settings\Open\File Name MRU

Access: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Access\Settings

But I found refernces sprinkled liberally throughout the registry.

Did you get a chance to peruse - http://slipstick.com ? There are about four topics that come up when I searched for MRU over there. Also, looked at http://regedit.com too and found - Microsoft Excell recent files (WXP-Pro) (this is not my mis-spelling.

Maybe something on http://support.microsoft.com ?

Doing a new install you could use the Custom Installation Wizard. It has an option for setting the number of files shown in the recent files list. Setting it to 0 should do the trick.

Obviously this is not an option if office is already installed on all wksta's. When upgrading to a new version it is though.

Stephen,

Please have a review of the following links.

WARNING!
The ClearHistory script will currently cause issues with XP. I still need to review this script for general public useage. It still removes a little too much data to be considered safe to use on users machines. However, the concept may prove useful to you.

MCA,

I think you need to review that script again. KiXtart 4.22 will allow plenty of new leaner/cleaner methods. I'm not sure about Windows 2000 but a couple entries don't exist on my Window XP system.

Your script is now just a little over 2 years old. Was probably great back then, and probably still pretty good, just needs some updating.

Might want to also give the user an option on resetting the boot.ini file.

I see the notes say you used it on XP, but
taskmgr settings. all counters
does not exist on my XP system.

add "Quickview with Notepad"

Not sure adding menus is something that should be mixed with a CLEANUP file.

- change "regfile" + "vbsfile" to edit mode
Again, maybe a good idea, but not really in the realm of cleanup.

Extensive use of
shell "%comspec% /e:1024 /c deltree /y
The new KiXtart 4.22 should now be able to do all that natively.

Perhaps reviewing/testing your version along with my version and putting all these methods together into a newer more modern script would be good.

Personally though I'm not too interested in still supporting any Windows 9x cleanup methods. However, if you have the time and or inclination please don't let me desuade you from supporting Windows 9x in an update by you.
