Hello,

I did read and understand the scripts mentioned here: http://www.gwspikval.com/jooel/FAQ/faq/000019.htm but I found one side effect - when using Outlook 2002 the "NEW" import profile feature is used rahter than the old NEWPROF.EXE. Problem is that the import feature actually starts outlook whereas if ouk2000 or earlier then the profile is created OK but outlook is NOT started. Is there any way to do the profile using import with outlook 2003 but NOT start outlook as part of the process.

Thanks

We are running outlook xp(2002) at work and created a custom prf file using the office custom installation wizard. This is included in the office resource kit.

Then we set a registry key to tell outlook to look in the users home folder and import a prf file from there. Outlook is not started automatically but profile is imported when user starts outlook.

More info?? Have a look at this: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/office/office2003/reskit/ork03/html/OutB03.asp

MS says this is the way to go for 2003 also.

btw: outlook 2002 and 2003 barf when newprof is ussed, all I got is lots of Dr Watson's on newporf.exe in our test setup.

yep, so you actually start the outlook with running it.
simple as that.
in the newer outlooks, the import profile switch is not no more.
and as it's unknown switch, the proggy is launched.

btw, I wonder what happens if old (say -97 version) of newprof.exe is used to create the profile, before outlook is installed... that should work for the initial...

with ORK, the outlook is not fully installed (at least in my package) for one person before he logs on.

Have you had a look at the script here -

Outlook/Exchange Configuration

KiXtart FAQ & How to's

The reason I bring it up is that we discovered that at http://www.slipstick.com , Sue Mosher talks about running Outlook.EXE for Version 10 and 11 (Outlook XP and Outlook 2003) to generate the profile. While this is OK, we found that this is really not necessary. Have a look at the script here..

thanks everyone and thanks kdyer,

The scripts that kdyer poined me to still use the 'first run' reg feature although as you correctly poined out the script does not in itself run outlook.exe.

However it appears that it is up to the user to eventually run outlook.exe and only then does the import of the profile actualy take place. if i am correct in my assessment then I would still like to complete the profile import while the script is running and not leave any unfinished business for "future" execution. there are number of things that the user can do before he/she decides to open outlook.exe for a first time and those tasks can compromize the success of that magical first run (such as deleting the directory where prf file is and so on).

Thanks for the help and I will be looking forward to any feedback on this issue.

Let me get ahold of my consulting buddy that I worked on this with and see what comes of this. He said he had some questions with regard to this script. While it seems to work fine, there is an issue with some errors or something. I will let you know.

Well, as far as I know Outlook must start for the import to complete.
I never had any problem doing it the way I suggested above. It's running flawless for about two years now.

with all respect to those making those complicated outlook scripts, using newprof etc..., i find the following utility soooo much easier:
Automated Exchange/Outlook Mail Profile Creator
just call the exe with the exchange server and the profile/username as arguments and it creates a profile for the user if it doesn't already exist.
Saves us LOTS of outlook-configuring for all our users on all our PCs.
