One simple thing you can do to make the main page look a bit more up to date is change the news to a scroller...Like the one I did below. Well I didnt right the javascript. You could then set the height of the scroller to match the other parts of the main page...Eliminating having to scroll down where there is no body to see all news...As Les stated above. Just an idea... possible news scroller [ 10. November 2003, 22:28: Message edited by: CitrixMan ]

Could also recommend other sites like -
Yellow Dog LINUX
But, maybe some design elements need to come into play here?
Thinking about this from a design standpoint..
Web Wonk Net Tips for Writers and Designers While this site is ancient in the computer world, it is still appropriate.
Creating Killer Websites
I agree we should not do any fancy schmancy stuff. But some PHP for dynamic content for news blurbs or time of day maybe kind of cool. I think at the least should look professional.

Dear,
Henri was thinking about something new. Tomorrow, we will ask him "may his logo change too". Henri wants a clean board without a lot of noise on it. So all kind of animations, music and other page movements aren't on his first priority list. Changes to contents, site structures and forum software belong to that list.
Our opinion it is a very unique layout: simple, artistic and nice. For us a necessary change isn't necessary. So, we vote too to keep.
About the homepage we suggest to get it fit on one screen without the necessary to scroll. Latest news can stay on the mainpage and the total news information can be moved to a subpage.
We agree with Les about removing the mixed font sizes on i.e. main page. See for our version Question: Henri, when implementing new UBB 6.3.1 release?
We appreciate the suggestion of R2D2 about some actual layout. Possible, that other guys have also experiences with this kind of stuff. Possible, that Mart have some time to design such modern looking and attractive page. Better looking with new buttons and layout. Later on the contents can be incorporated. Some of the examples returns a chaos expression to us. Chaos means it is simple to recognize the struc- ture of those sites. The "samba" page looks very nice. A lot of things for a new looking are also possible with java. Indeed on the javascriptsource.com at lot of useful scripts can been found. With http://www.cooltext.com/ you can create all kind of graphical elements for our pages. Also Xara Webstyle can create modern looking and attractive webpages.
Of course, we agree with Co that we should keep it also simple. People, who must wait a long period before seeing the wanted information (reason: downloading flash information) are already moved this site.
About simplicity: Google shows same simplity, but it is the major search engine in the world. Their policy was: simple layout, no flashing and no pop-up elements.
Henri is planning to upgrade the UBB.Classic software. He has chosen for the UBB.Thread software. Software, which returns indeed a better performance and also which gives more functionalities. The exact moment for upgrading isn't known at this moment.
Possible actions before moving to new layout
- which structure should be the results? Major elements are "home", "bulletin board",
"downloads", "manual", "release notes" and "links". - are we choosing for an attractive and modern looking site with or without all
kind of animations, moving objects, etc. - which possible software or scripts we can use for the layout.
Important is, that it can be maintained easily. greetings.
