Some of you use Ghost.. If you have any of the BroadCom Gigabit connections, keep reading. [Wink] For example, we have some new Compaq d530 machines.

Here is the Dell Link provided by Symantec - Broadcom Gigabit Extreme Ethernet Driver Link
http://support.dell.com/filelib/download.aspx?FileID=77752&releaseid=R61393

Download the Broadcom Gigabit NDIS2 driver..

If you have a problem (like I did when using PC DOS), refer to this:
Title: 'Error: "An external application . . . failed to start . . ." when creating a Ghost RIS boot disk'
Document ID: 2002011509415625
> Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/support/ghost.nsf/docid/2002011509415625?Open&src=w (slow link)

Go to the following key in Regedit - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\vdisk.exe

Change the Default value from - C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\vdisk.exe to C:\vdisk.exe

Be sure to copy vdisk.exe from C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost to c:\

Go to Start/All Programs/Symantec Ghost/Ghost Boot Wizard

Scroll down to..

Microsoft RIS Boot Option
For use with the Windows2000 Remote Installation Services

Click "Add"

Select "NDIS2 Driver"

Click "OK"

In the "Template Properties" screen

Click "Browse..."
C:\Broadcom\Dell\570x\B57.dos is the NDIS2 Driver used.

In the Driver Name: type in B57$

Leave Parameters: blank

Click "OK"

Rename New Driver Template to BroadCom

Click "Next >"

Under DOS Version select
Use PC-DOS
(Note: if you use MS-DOS, it will not work!)

Click "Next >"

Select: Symantec Ghost

Program Location
Ghost.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\ghost.exe
Parameters -ffx -fn

Click "Next >"

DHCP will assign the IP settings

Click "Next >"

RIS Menu Options
RIS Boot Menu Name: BroadCom
RIS Boot Description: BroadCom
RIS Boot Directory: BroadCom

Click "Next >"

Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard - Review
Review the settings..

Click "Next >"

Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard - Finished
The new option has been added to the RIS boot menu. Press the Start Again button
to restart the wizard from the beginning, or Finish to exit.

Click "Finish"

BTW, this is for Ghost 7.5..

Things learned..

(1) The VDISK.EXE "fix" from Symantec
(2) The "Dell" Driver.. I tried the driver from IBM, BroadCom, Compaq, etc. The Dell version was the only one that worked.
(3) The switches -ffx as well as -fni. I had to use both as these systems will "freeze" is the middle of an image dump.
(3) PC-DOS: MS-DOS never worked with these systems.

We also struggled for a while getting the IBM broadcoms to work with ghost. We finally got it working though.

We don't use Ghost here yet but have been "told" it is the corporate standard. We use DeployCenter from PowerQuest and for a floppy boot we use http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/network/

Asked our HelpDesk tech if she got it to work with the new BroadCom NICs but she hasn't gone there yet.

Have used them both Les. Couldn't remember the link to that one though and didn't spend the time to look it up.

They both work fine for boot disks. The NU2 guy actually espouses using his modified PE version for CD/DVD booting environment. The MS version is not authorized except for large enterprise customers.

The issue is not really the BroadCom NIC, according to what I've read and seen. It has to do with the new SATA support which has a conflict with Ghost 7.5 Supposedly you can use Ghost 7.0 or 8.0 and it should work. (I have not confirmed this myself though.)

From what I can tell this issue has risen due to all the new models from different vendors who now support SATA (Serial ATA).

If anyone has more concrete evedince or other information to the contrary please post that information as well as the source if possible.

Doc,

You are right about SATA and I have read in posts where people disable it before imaging a system.

-FFX Drive detection Causes Norton Ghost to prefer the use of Extended Interrupt 13h disk access for hard disk drive operations. Ghost 5.1c and later

-FNI Drive detection Disables direct IDE access support.
Use the NOIDE switch if you want to turn off all IDE access with Norton Ghost 2003.

Just rec'ed Ghost 8.0 and it works fine. Can also use the PXE driver. Do not have to do any "hacking" or special setup.

Cool stuff!

Just played around with this.. You can use the PXE driver. You do not need the BroadCom NDIS2 driver as you did under 7.5. However, you can use the Driver too (it now comes with Ghost).
