Getting the hang of it

I have Citrix XPa Server with a modem configured on COM1. My problem is sometimes Users can not connect to the server using the Modem, when quering the modem I get a message "port already opened", even though I have no programs running that could be using that port, the only solution is to reboot the server and then it works OK.

Anyone seen this problem, and how to find out which program/service using the COM port without having to restart the Server?.

Thanks,

Like your subject line says... it is a non KiX issue. You may have better luck posting to a dedicated "Citrix" or "Thin" board.

I had the same sort of problem with ICA dial-in lines on my Citrix server. In testing, I found that simply dialing the number with a regular telephone and then hanging it up was enough to hang the modem and require a reboot. I eventually just gave up on using ICA and now just use RAS.

Les,

The excellent knowledge and support of this forum is what made me post this subject here. I have tried to dial a number and hang-up but still does not work.

That's my point... just dialing the number and hanging up is enought to screw it up requiring a reboot. That is why I abandonded ICA in favor of RAS.

the COM port interface in Windows is indeed far from good... is there a separate service on the ICA that handles the COM port? If so, try restarting that one...

Are you disabling/stopping the ICA dial-in service at any point? If you are, a reboot is required when you re-enable it.

Another possibility is that the modem is micsonfigured or the cable damaged. The modem should raise hardware signals when in use, and drop them on a hang-up/reset. If it doesn't the port will appear to be busy, and the last program to use ut may hang waiting for the hardware signals to drop. This program will probably be the ICA listener.

The software may also be waiting for a hardware "pulse", which is a signal that the device is cleared. From very vague memory it is a DTR drop or toggle.

Can you try a different modem & cable? Preferably a different model of modem.

Also check for any extra settings - hardware flow-control and connectivity are the most relevant.

When it next happens, try disconnecting the modem cable at the server end and see if the port clears.

FWIW We've supported ICA dial-in across 12 devices on two different server platforms for the last 4 years. The modems are old USR Sportsters, and we don't have any problems.

Finally, check the Citrix support site for modem issues - make sure your modem is supported.
