Hi guys & galls

Does anyone out there use the above program?

Basically it goes off and see's if the pc has been ghosted. The nasty thing about this utility is that it requires you to run an .exe while logged on as domain Administrator. This is not very helpful when you got a couple of thousands pc's to run it on.

I'm not prepared (Or are security analytst wont allow us) to use su.exe and as I'm using NT4 sp6 , i cannot run the job as a scheduled task as an admin.

Does anyone out there know a way of finding out what this utiltiy searches for on the pc or a way that I can run the job without being a domain administrator ?

Sorry if this makes no sense but im sure whoever uses symantec ghost, will know what I mean!!!

Don't know what the util looks for.
Are you not allowed to use su in encrypted scripts also (like kix code in exe files)? If that’s allowed you might give kixcrypt a try. Reading some stuff about it on the board I’ll say decrypting will give anyone a hard job if it isn’t impossible without having the kixcrypt sourcecode to see how the encrypting is done.
Personally I don’t use kixcrypt, no need yet.

I checked out that utility that was provided in Ghost Enterprise v7.0. It did NOT need to have an adminstrator login it needed rights by the user to write in the directory the software was loaded and the utility would be placed in the Login Script. However, I bypassed the software installer and manually setup the software. It worked fine but, saw no need to use it and we havene't used it since.

LOL but true.

Little question for AzzerShaw:
Why would you like to know if a wksta is ghosted? When we ghost a wksta this done by an admin an there is a good reason for it.

Perhaps so that he can detect who is not running an AUTHORIZED Ghost image desktop. [Eek!]

However, my guess is that it is looking for a fingerprint file which can be disabled by using a switch.

Just put a registry key/value into the registry of ghosted images. Even SysPrep has this feature where you can specify a specific identifying string for the image which can then be read from the registry after the imaging process.

Thanks for all you replys but I dont think Ive made myself clear.

I know how to use Ghost and what the switches are for it but there is an audit utility which comes with the software, which searches your domain for all the pc's that have been ghosted and reports back how many licenses are required. This audit runs by an .exe that needs to be executed with domain administrator privlages (hence cant out it into login script). Just need to know if I can run this .exe as a domain user or if anyone knows what file that the audit utility looks for on a ghosted pc........my head hurts.... [Mad]

Now, you stated yourself that the utility requires domain admin rights, so why do you try to run it under a regular user account? [Confused]

The FAQ Forum shows a couple of ways to run applications under admin privs. E.g. schedule a task on the computers via Task scheduler that runs the audit utility under an adminsitrative account.

Security risk, im afraid, it would require a domain admin logon and if this was automated, it would mean having the admin pasword, if I was to do a autoadmin logon.

Ideally I would like it added as a service, that a ordinary user can run once a week. I know it was a long shot but just wanted to check incase anyone knew a way around it. It was more a application question then a kix, but thanks for you replies.

Create a package using KiXCrypt.. That should do it.

What is wrong with using the Task Scheduler then? This approach would fulfill all your requirements with regards to the account used and the scheduling.

Cant use task scheduler, cause it seems to be cracked down in a policy, for whatever reason. It just deletes itself as soon as a user logs in [Frown]

I could give kixcrypt ago then! Haven't used it before but I'll give it ago..... [Confused]

If you have local admin rights to the remote computers you might incorporate (psexec from sysinternals) in to your kix script to run your executable remotely (Read The Manual [RTM])on the remote machine. I have had a lot of success with this since i am not a "DOMAIN ADMIN". I have had to figure ways to complete my job without those permissions and still stay with in the Security Guidelines. I hope this helps [Cool]
