Hi all

If anybody knows i would like to know if it is posible to copy a hole userprofile from server to client when logging on. And back to server when logging off? or is it posible to edit the regdatabase to make the userprofile path a folder on the server where folder = @userid

Thanks

Glenn

yes.
in user manager write the user profile path to point \\server\share
if you want to use for many users this type of profiles (roaming) your network load will increase pretty much. and I would suggest that you hide the shares for users (it looks uggly when server has 500 shares)
like: \\server\share_by_username$

I've used that on my own account and have two minuses:
-logon slows down (on slower network too much)
-if some file does not write properly (usually some file from recent folder) the whole profile corrupts.

Using roaming profiles will do what you want.

Thanks Lonkero that seems to work.

In the connect to line i userprofiles, i have put in the sharename \\server1\users\user1

But there is also a column where i can select a drive eg. d: og Z: what is that for?

Thanks

Bryce,

As you maybe aware, with roaming profiles.. The caveat is that Login/Logout times are significantly increased.

Just my two bits on this.

I quess you mean the one on the next line...
it means where your homeshare is connected.
there is normally as default value z:
it's nothing to be concerned about if you don't use homeshares for users. and if you do, you can still set the drive in logonscript.
more about that in NT-help and at microsoft.com

Dear,

Some ideas:

When you are using roaming profiles the user profile will automatically
be transfer between client and server.
Important to know is that the logging process can be dramatically slow
down when
- number of directories and shortcuts is very great.
- number of temporary files (mostly the result of internet explorer
or other browsers)
- size of your email archive or file is very great.
Suggestion for reduction of it:
- remove unwanted shortcuts. possible to do it during the evening
on your server. all user profiles stay during the night on your server.
it is also possible to remove other unwanted files in those profiles.
==> unwanted shortcuts can be: uninstall and readme entries.
- point outlook files already on your server.
Greetings.

btw: mostly manager told your script is too slow, but mostly the amount of allocated MBytes slowdown your logging on process.

Hi again

seem to have a little problem.

in user manager i wrote the user profile path to point \\server\share

This works just fine with a win2k client, but when i log on a win95 client the profile is created in c:\win95\profiles\user. and not on the server.

Any ideas ?

Hi,
I've done a great deal of research on the use of Roaming profiles. From my reading it appears that it is not possible to mix roaming profiles between the W9x os and the Windows NT based OS (including 2000 and xp). See Microsoft's Tech Net site. Search for the article ID: Q264866 or Q269378. I quote, "Having the profiles between WIndows 9x and Operating Systems based on NT Technology is not supported and can lead to the corruption of said policies."

My solution: any PCs that will have roaming users on them have been upgraded to W2000 or XP.

For anyone else out there, I have encountered an issue where the addprinterconnection function does not work when using a roaming profile. If I delete that profile then the script will work. Has anyone encountered something similar?

Thanks.

Yes, that is well-known. Windows 9x are not meant to be multi-user operating systems. The profiles generated are not interchangeable.
