I'm looking to script out automated 2000/2003 server builds with kixtart. Anyone have experience and can you suggest any existing scripts that are available to do the process?

Do you wish to build clients from files stored on the server or do you want to actually build servers? Either way something, like ghost might be your best strategy, I don't think kixtart is best suited for system builds.

Didn't Chris develop a kixtart/sysprep whitepaper/script on performing win2k workstations builds ... if memory serves, was quite an impressive piece of work. It leverages WMI to do alot of hardware detection, etc. Being a developer, I,m too lazy to search for it though [Wink] ...

don't use kix... although I can't think of what kix could do in this.

Sysprep is the method, and in the deploy.cab are all the tools.

Actually, I created a KiXtart front-end for computer configurations after a SysPrep/Disk-Image install in order to configure the administrator password, set the static IP address and optionally install special software that is not needed on every computer. Still testing the stuff, but I'll post it here once it's finished.

However, the main tool is SysPrep.

But I think Chris went above and beyond what sysprep could (easily) do. It hooks Kixtart into the post-setup stuff ... heres the link:

If my reading of this document is correct it is mainly about sysprep. Kixtart is just used as a wrapper. Chris suggested he might try to use kixtart in a more active role but he hasn't posted that yet. Jens seems to be going in this direction.

PS. Shawn are you quoting me? I don't remember ever saying something like that. [Wink]

Ok, my next question then is does anyone know of a tool other than ADS that is used for this where I can customize a front end then creat a build to load either over the network or from CD. I understand sysprep seems to be the choice in a couple of instances, but is there a COTS product available that will do this for me? Thanks to all for your replies... RL [Roll Eyes]

You can look into Symantec Ghost or Powerquest DeployCenter. Additionally, Microsoft WinPE ( http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/programs/sa/support/winpe.asp )might be helpful, too.
