I am trying to script in my login script "SwapMouseButton" for left handed users.

This seems easy, well no it is harder then I thought.

I have tried changing "SwapMouseButtons", but this does not affect the current logged on user.

So I have downloaded an application off the internet that swaps the mouse button over on the fly.

So I want to take a snapshot of the registry before i run this application then after and see the difference.

Now I have downloaded loads of comapre programs off the internet and they are all rubish.

so anyone know of a good one that works [Wink]

Or any other suggestions.

Thanks

I use regsnap (Or maybe snapshoot - I will check at home.) It both dumps snapshots plus does the compare & generates a reg file containing the extact differences. Unfortunately, there have been several programs with this name. Also, while I downloaded it orginally from nonags as freeware, the authors have since changed it to commercial ware I think.

Since, I downloaded it as freeware, I would think I could send you a copy of my version. Unfortunately, I have it at home. Send me your e-mail address I will try to dig out my version for you.

Hi Richard,

It will be about 7 or 8 hours before I am at my home computer so here are some links you could checkout.

http://lastbit.com/regsnap/default.asp
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,19840,00.asp
http://www.sharewarejunction.com/info.asp?ProductID=4824
http://www.softlookup.com/preview/dis10275.html

Theses links seem to offer regsnap as shareware, freeware, timetrial & commercial. Maybe one of them might suit your needs immediately. Confusing range of versions & choices - it appears the author has been evolving his marketing strategy. You might also try doing a google search of "regsnap" it gave me a lot of links.

PS: This link seems to offer a beta version for free (It appears version up to 2.0 were freeware):
http://www.cspltd.ndirect.co.uk/windows/system.htm

Ah: I see why he went commercial The MSDN site gives it a hearty recommendation.

simple switch does not do.
I think we have one script on this board focusing on this subject.
not more than a year old.

the main thing is to get windows to read the updated value from reg, IIRC.

You your right lonk that modifying the registry is not just the soloution.

I have done a compare on every part of the registry, and only the "SwapMouseButton" is changing.

I have done a search on the board, but get nothing.

Any ideas lonk or anyone.. doing a search on "active registry" now.

code:
SystemParametersInfo(SPI_SETMOUSEBUTTONSWAP, 1, NIL, 0)

The above can be used, I am not a programmer, how could I use this API call within KiXtart or VBS.

Try adding:

SETM "SwapMouseButton="

or possibly one of the other SET commands

The valuename after SETM can be anything...

We used this to apply settings for the screensaver.

Here is another discussion about this...

Applying Registry Settings

This doesn't work for everything... [Frown] but may work for what you are doing. [Roll Eyes]

not sure alpo that is the topic I remember, but at least it goes pretty close.
some settings can be forced explorer kill and restart.
and some by opening a appropiate folder in explorer (see fontinstall() udf)

Thanks for getting back, tried everything and it seems it is going to be one of them entrys that cannot be refreshed in KiX.

I will get someone to write it in Dephi or C++, using the API call code I posted above.

Then use it against a security Group on the login script.

Thanks

Richard,

Does the reg change work after a reboot? If so, why not always set this entry for lefties and reset it for righties??
You could 'warn' the user of the mousebutton change and tell them to reboot (that's wat M$ always says) if necessary...

We use mandatory profiles, so I could just create another profile for the left handed user.

But I want to keep the number of profiles down to a minimum.

Thanks to Al-Po I can get rid of our special ScreenSaver Logour Profile and script it.

Thanks

Thanks Shawn

I have created this project in VB6, which hides the form, but for the life of me I don't know how to compile it.

or if it can be done in KiX then cool. [Big Grin]

ok on its way, if you end up not using it, fine by me, it only took 10 mins to do ... you can get usage info by just running the util with no parms ... that took more time than coding the call to the API [Wink] The usage text is just a straight copy/paste from the API docs on MSDN ...

C:\>swapmouse

SwapMouse v1.0 (www.kixtart.org)

Syntax:

swapmouse flag

Parameters:

flag - specifies whether the mouse button meanings are reversed or restored. If this parameter is 1, the left button generates right button messages and the right button generates left-button messages. If this parameter is 0, the buttons are restored to their original meanings.

Return Value:

If the meaning of the mouse buttons was reversed previously, before the function was called, the return value is non-zero. If the meaning of the mouse buttons was not reversed, the return value is zero.
