Agreed ... which is a shame really, because up until now the service has been excellent.

Ah, well... already been flamed for hijaaking so what the hell...

On critical RAID5 systems I also deploy a failover drive and ALWAYS do daily backups. I have had multiple drive failures on RAID5 systems resulting in a loss of the containers.

I do bring into question, the ISP's use of the word 'recent'... [Confused]

lolja, also like this line:

"All files will be reinstalled as they where before the failure."

and especially this line:

"We estimate it will take approximately 4 hours."

ah yes, what a wonderfull industry we work in, eh ?

Something tells me that my hosting company is not telling "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth". What started out as supposedly a simple drive failure has now resulted in the whole server being swapped out. I have had several very apologetic e-mails from the company concerned, but that ain't getting KiXforms.org back on air. Just to make matters worse, I am upto my eyeballs with loads of other crap this weekend, so I just hope that their backup really is complete (apart from the missing BB posts).

If I could afford it, I'd have RAID50 on our fileservers. Right now, I'm on RAID5 plus hot-spare plus daily backups. I hope to add an 'backup-to-disk' option onto a cheap ATA-RAID array, too. I'm a believer in double-redundancy (might be from serving on submarines [Wink] )

Your provider definitely sounds like it's not telling the whole truth. Why would a RAID5 rebuild fail unless there's more than just one harddrive that's broken? Would indicate that the RAID controller is not doing it's job correctly. Maybe it's software-RAID5 ? [Eek!]

With regards to the 4-hour restore, depending on backup technology used, I'd say it's acceptable, depending on how much data has to be restored. Do you have your own server box or is your website just a tiny part of a web server farm?

KiXforms.org is on a shared server i.e. I am not the only one to lose their web site temporarily. It would be nice but prohibitively expensive to have a dedicated server.

As a belt and suspenders approach, I also do daily backups of key data to a large ATA store on my backup server. The backup server can then do a local backup to tape without additional network traffic.

Double drive failures are rare, but one failed drive can bring down the SCSI bus. I have had that happen to me and also had failures of the hotplug backplane.

Depending on the robustness of the server, there are a raft of failures that could necessitate more than a drive replacement. Anything from power supplies, to RAID controller could complicate things. On my mission critical systems I even have hot spare servers.

Belt AND suspenders AND ductape?

Ok, the good news is that KiXforms.org is finally back on air. The bad news is that the latest date and time stamp which I can find on any file is early July, not the 23rd as promised by my hosting company. This means that we may have lost one months worth of posts rather than a fortnights. I have temporarily disabled the board while I investigate further.

[EDIT] Spoke too soon - down again, giving up, going out and getting pissed as a f**t [Wink] Only kidding ... will keep monitoring. [/EDIT]

Rod: Can you make backups yourself? Migh be a hassle, but maybe even overwrite a full backup every other day?

Hi Jens,

Everything but the BB is backed up to my two PCs at home every time I make a change. I can also backup the Forums and have done so in the past, however it becomes a more and more lengthy exercise as the BB grows in size. Once we are back up and operational, I do intend to run my own backup every weekend just in case.

Ok, here is the latest, the KF web site is back up on it's feet and working just fine, however the backup used to restore the Forums was just over 1 month old. My hosting provider are going to attempt to recover the data from the damaged RAID set, however they have no idea of how successful they will be. So the question is, do I leave the Forum disabled for a couple of days pending the outcome of the data recovery, or do I just bite the bullet and enable the forums even though we have lost a month worth of posts? Please note that if I do enable the forums and the restore is successful, then we would have to decide whether the old data was more valuable than any posts made since the forum had been re-enabled. I would be interested in everyone's opinion?

Keep it diabled until you hear whether they're able to restore the database.

I agree with sealeopard.
Get as much as possible old data back before posting new stuff.

Actually is sort of unbelievable that your hosting company full backup is a month old [Eek!]
Probably lose my job if we have a crash and I tell my boss that we are going back online with a month's work down the drain. Would like to see his face actually when I tell him [Big Grin]

It would depend on the SLA for the type of service provided. A $30/month hosting service might only include a weekly backup whereas the "premium" $100/month service includes daily backups.

Not knowing the details of the contract it's hard to judge what type of service was promised.

shite... a host that doesn't handle their backups [Eek!]

I'd script an FTP based backup if I were you heh... or better still; switch host to one that hopefully handles it better for the same price, I'm sure there's such available, looking at the situation...

hehee, sounds familiar...

you might try same as I did when korg was down:
-find some webchat and express your frustration on all those simple minded ppl you find.
-find a webgame that fancies you (I like pool) and spend hours during night time just playing it.
-do some work for a change.

those 3 kept me going the time I lost connection with my beloved one.
and they actually made our relationship much more healthier...

heh, just kidding.

Bad news I'm afraid. The hosting company were not able to recover any data from the damaged RAID set. I will therefore be re-enabling the forums as soon as possible. Apologies for the loss of service since the weekend and the loss of data, but as the saying goes "sh*t happens" [Frown]
