I've run into an issue deploying win2kSP4 with kix 4.21

I don't know if this is has anything to do with each other, and I'm currently testing now, but this is the sitch:

Basically what happens is, win2k extracts as expected, update.exe starts and drops to 0% proc time, Kix32 goes to 100% time and then sits there. If I raise update.exe to high priority you can hear the drive start to work and kix processor time drops down.

The code is basically unchanged from the code I used to deploy SP3

code:
		if $os="Win2k" and right(trim(@csd),1) < '4'
if updateapp("Win2kSP4",3)="yes"
md '%windir%\sp4'
sleep 2
$=sendmessage(@wksta," The computer will automatically restart when complete.@CRLF This will take about 10-15 minutes.")
$=writevalue("$HKLMS\Microsoft\Ole","LegacyImpersonationLevel","2",REG_DWORD)
$=Writeprofilestring("$logon\inventory\Install.log","Win2kSP4","@wksta","@date")
shell'$setup\apps\win2ksp4\w2ksp4_EN.exe /U /X:%windir%\sp4'
run '%windir%\sp4\i386\update\update.exe /q /N /F '
$m=split("A CRITICAL Update is NOW taking place. Please do not open any programs until your system reboots and starts again. This Update will take about 10-15 minutes.",
"The Upgrade is running. Please do not open any programs. The Upgrade will be complete in about 15 minutes and your computer will restart.",chr(44))
while 1
for each $message in $m
$=Messagebox($message, "Message from MIS",65536)
sleep 3
next
loop
quit
endif
endif

I'm adding sleep statements inside the while loop to try and slow down kix (if that is the issue). The loop is there to keep throwing message boxes up to entertain the user while the SP installs.

Any Ideas??

infinite loop you got there.
if you have no messages to show, it will just do "while 1 loop" and you know what that means.

Radimus Maximus,

You're a very professional entertainer [Eek!] [Eek!] [Eek!]

Sample Installation takes 12.5 minutes (averages your estimate) thus you're users have to get rid of 150 Boxes [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

[edit:was shortly fooled by your excentric indent style and assumed a next to be missing]
[edit2: revised amount of Boxes from 250 to 150, still [Eek!] ]

jochen?
and what is difference between "next" and "next"? [Razz]
I don't get it...

and you think the infinite loop having no sleep in it does not do the actual hog we are evidencing? [Eek!]

There is NONE !

as Rad said that the Workstation is rebooted automatically in one of his sendmessages [Mad]

Well, if he is lucky [Wink]

Oh, by the way : there are in any case messages to display as these are hardcoded

heh, maybe...
but not.
if you see the split.
it splits a string which is already in array format ("","") and I bet it's not going ok.

there is infinite loop anyway.
even though it might never get there but there still is.
or do you see exit method of while in the routine?

the idea is that the message box will keep appearing during the entire time that sp4 is running.... so the silly user clicks away the box and forgets the update is running, they get reminded again.

Lonk may be right if the Split isn't splitting.. I will investigate further at the office

Possible ... get rid of the Quotation and just split by comma

or skip the split as it's already in array format.

btw, isn't the quit there for nothing as the execution never gets there?

yep, it never gets to the quit... but that doesn't hurt. If nothing else, it is a 'reminder' the script is supposed to end.

that was the problem...

code:

; ****************************** Win2k Service Pack 4 *****************************************
if $os="Win2k" and right(trim(@csd),1) < '4'
if updateapp("Win2kSP4",3)="yes"
$=setconsole("hide")
md '%windir%\sp4'
sleep 2
$=writevalue("$HKLMS\Microsoft\Ole","LegacyImpersonationLevel","2",REG_DWORD)
$=Writeprofilestring("$logon\inventory\Install.log","Win2kSP4","@wksta","@date")
shell '$setup\apps\win2ksp4\w2ksp4_EN.exe /U /X:%windir%\sp4'
sleep 2
run '%windir%\sp4\i386\update\update.exe /u /N /F '
$m= "A CRITICAL Update is NOW taking place. Please do not open any programs until your system reboots.",
"The Upgrade is running. Please do not open any programs. This will take about 10-15 minutes.",
"The Upgrade will be complete in about 15 minutes and your computer will restart on it's own.",
"You can stop clicking now."
while ubound($m)>0
for each $message in $m
$=Messagebox($message, "Message from MIS",65536)
sleep 2
next
loop
quit
endif
endif

nyet.

The simpler the problem gets the more obfuscated it is [Mad]

[edit: wonder what MCA's kixstrip util would've said to Rad's first post, can't test actually]
