Gaven Gaven Starting to like KiXtart Registered: 2003-06-19 Posts: 103 Loc: Washinton DC, USA	This stems from my post Automatic shut down I believe I have identified a glitch in Windows XP. I have noticed that in all versions prior to XP, a shutdown or restart command can easily be sent to a computer that is sitting at the logon prompt and the computer will respond. It would appear that while an XP computer will comply when a user is logged on, it will only comply with a shutdown command if no user is logged on and NOT a restart command. Any ideas out there?

And like you already observed, i stripped the script down to the bare minimum (basically just a shutdown command) and it still failed (believe I was getting error 53 ?!) ... also tried the shutdown.exe command and no worky ... There is something in Windows XP that is blocking or denying the shutdown but cant for the life of me figure it out ... we have a similar scheduled job running under Windows NT ... just does a shutdown/restart at 2:00am every morning but it runs under the AT scheduler not task scheduler ... would be interested in knowing if this same problem appears under the AT command on Windows XP. If yes (or no) not sure what that would say or mean ... -Shawn

Shawn Shawn Administrator Registered: 1999-08-13 Posts: 8611	Yeah i think it is ... I think the AT command under XP is just a crude skin to the Task Scheduler, im trying AT here on Xp and having no luck ... the job terminates with an ERROR status ... no code. Just running Shutdown.exe flat out ...

You Cannot Schedule a Windows XP-Based Computer to Shut Down and Restart by Using the AT Command with Shutdown.exe While this allows for the shutdown command to run under the system account, it still must be logged on. Maybe it is "doable" but, why not use the Task Scheduler (built-in) or the JT.EXE that has been discussed here? There are other shutdown utils other than SHUTDOWN.EXE too. For example, PSSHUTDOWN.EXE from Sysinternals. We have used PSSHUTDOWN with a scheduled task or AT/WINAT on many of our servers. Thanks, Kent [ 09. Sealeopard Sealeopard KiX Master Registered: 2001-04-25 Posts: 11165 Loc: Boston, MA, USA	It might also be possible to first authenticate with a user account against the remote comuter via WMI before issuing the shutdown command. This way the WMI process will run under user credential and not the default LocalSystem credentials.
