It extracts to C:\winnt\Cache\Adobe Reader 6.0\ENUBIG

copy that folder to your distribution point

Thanks [Smile]

btw; do they still have that post-install annoying HKLM EULA accepted key (think also that there weren't any file associations before that one existed?)?

Rad,

Thanks for the info. Did you notice the name of the last folder there - ENUBIG

What a pig. This new reader is twice as slow at loading as 5 was, and 5 is slower then 4.

By the time 7 comes out you can go eat lunch while you wait for it to load.

I need to read and see what feature it is that I just "can't" live without with this new 6 version. Maybe I'll just stay with 5 until I start hitting too many documents made in 6 that I can't read anymore.

Good information from you though about installing it.

Does it overwrite older versions of Acrobat Reader or must they deinstalled before the installation?

it kind of overwrite the old one, but it leaves the old dir structure and old reg keys behind.

It would be best to uninstall the old version first.

From Windows Watch:

Upgrade Gotcha
Once you've downloaded Acrobat 6, double-click on the file and the installation should go smoothly. However the installation isn't quite as smooth if you have an earlier version of Acrobat Reader already installed (and most of you will). You should uninstall any older versions of Acrobat before installing Reader v6.

The v6 installation does NOT remove earlier versions of the reader software nor are you given any option to uninstall then during the v6 setup. This is a strange choice for Adobe to make. It was probably done so developers could have multiple Reader versions present for compatibility testing. However most users don't need that since the latest Reader will read all PDF files, regardless of version.

The result is that you'll have both Reader v6 and an earlier version (probably v5 or v4) on the same computer. That's not a serious problem until you later decide to do some tidying up. You go to Control Panel | Add / Remove Programs and look down the list of installed programs. You'll see that there's both Acrobat Reader v6 and an earlier version. In the spirit of computer cleanliness you uninstall the older version. Good choice but then you can't read any PDF files!

Reason? when you uninstalled the previous Reader, it removed the file association that tells Windows to use the Reader with any .PDF files.

The solution is to reinstall Reader v6, naturally enough. But it should not be necessary in the first place, the v6 installer should detect it's ancestor and offer to remove it.

Actually, Adobe Acrobat 5.0 did uninstall earlier versions, even when running a silent install. So, yeah, bad choice from Adobe.

this ought to do it...
code:

$acrobat=readvalue('HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\AcroRd32.exe','')
$acrover=getfileversion($acrobat)
if left($acrover,1)='5'
$UnInstKey=readvalue('HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Adobe Acrobat 5.0','UninstallString')
shell "$uninstkey -q"
endif

Nice [Smile]

I find it quite disturbing that one of the most widely used software's in the world doesn't come with any administration, maintenance and deployment instructions what so ever. [Roll Eyes]

I think they're workign on a adminsitrative tool. However, that tool should have been finished and released by the time they released Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 to at least when they released the full product Adobe Acrobat 6.0

Definitely not good customer service, and they are targetting the larger organizations with their newest product.
