cmarti cmarti Hey THIS is FUN Registered: 2001-02-26 Posts: 297 Loc: Little Rock, AR	Hello, I've been out here for a while now and looking at many of the posts by new members. Some of the posts will be cross posts or they may not have enough info in their post to troubleshoot their problem. Since the email field is required when you set up a profile can the ABC's of KiXtart board etiquette and message to new forum users be emailed to the user, not the link, but the text of the page be emailed. Most new people will not go through a forum site for helpful information because on most sites info like this is not available. This site is an exception, and a good one I might add.. . Just a thought... Just thought I'd add I come out to this site everyday during my lunch break at work. (I know you're thinking I have no life but I work about 30 miles from where I live in a different city so I don't have anything in this city to do so I stay here and eat in my office...) L8tr...

The lag on this board when there's a couple of members on it for example, I think is more related to CPU than bandwidth. [ 11. With Apache on Linux (and possibly Windows, not too sure) PHP can be in one of three modes: Traditional CGI (external process) Loadable module (like a DLL) via apxs Compiled in to the web server executable as static code PERL can also be external or compiled in. If not used very often you would probably compile in as loadable module (saves memory). Where it is integral to your site you would probably compile in as static code (improves execution). One of the major benefits of compiling in PHP is that it supports persistent connections. This means that where your database backend is (say) MySql, the database connection can be opened once by the web server process, and all subsequent requests which use the same authentication can reuse the connection. This is true even if the requests are for completely different end users or applications. Reusing a connector saves time, CPU cycles and memory required to start up and shut down a connection. An external CGI process suffers a huge overhead including things like building/copying the environment, loading from disk, pre-allocating swap, fork/exec and all subsequent context switching.

CGI is a loose "standard" mechanism for running arbitrary programs. These may be compiled programs like VB or C++, or script like DOS batch files, PERL, PHP or indeed KiXtart. PHP is not CGI. PHP may be used as CGI. Running PHP in CGI mode will have the same disadvantage as any other programming or scripting language run in CGI mode. Running PHP as an internal web server module has significant advantages - it is no longer running as a CGI. Note Maskens caveat; quote: of course also depending on PHP implementation and OS So, PHP which is configured to run as a CGI is CGI, with associated problems. PHP which is not configured to run as a CGI is not CGI, with associated benefits

CGI boards are generally slower, at least according to my own and others experience PHP is made purely with web implementations in focus. [ 12. Both run on PHP. VBulletin isn't free.
