Went to - http://www.netal.com/download.htm
And downloaded the "System Scripting Runtime 1.4"
Within this, archive it shows that you can do a PING or other Network options on line, i.e. no 'SHELL' should be necessary when running from a script.
This does a whole host of things from the DLL that are network-related.
A fair portion of the funionality is built into KiX, but this loooks good.
Very cool stuff!

Hmmm...
If you need to do a PING, then yes that would work..
Let's see what else SScrRun.dll can do.
IPNetwork Object > DNSLookup > DNSLookupEx > Ping > SendSyslogMessage
LMNetwork Object > SendNetMessage > NBTNetwork > QueryNodeStatus
SNMPManager Object > Get > GetNext > Set > GenerateTrap
Variables Collection Object > Add > Remove > RemoveAll
Variable Object > PostIPCEvent
You get the idea.
