Hello all. I have a flaky server on my domain that contains some net shares used by a few departments. Lately the server has been crashing in the morning and when users try to map the nonexistent resource during login, Kix hangs and the users have a hard time getting anything else mapped.

Does anyone have suggestions for a "map resource timeout value" or other way to make the Kixtart script more bulletproof to nonexistent resources?

The mappings will time out (eventually), but of course each one will got through the time out.

What you can do depends on how the server has crashed. In some circumstances you will get responses to ping connectivity checks, so that may not determine if the server is up.

A simple solution for you to mimimise the time that it takes is to check @ERROR after your first mapping to the dodgy server. If the first mapping fails skip the other mappings to the same server, and send an alert via mail, mesg or event log to let you know there is a problem.

Instead of trying to make your Kixtart script more bulletproof, make your server more bulletproof.

And secondly set your server to reboot automatically after the crash. However, I have to agree that you should cure the disease and not the symptoms.

What you could do is an exist..

Kdyer hit the nail on the head with the IF EXIST suggestion. Testing for the presence of shares before mapping them is a great idea. We'll consider rolling this out at work.
