Allen Allen KiX Supporter Registered: 2003-04-19 Posts: 4572 Loc: USA	Hey Guys, hoping someone may have run into this, and/or can provide a link that I can't seem to find. Windows XP HOME I would like to setup some home pcs with non-admin accounts. One of the problems with that is Windows Update does not run. Under XP Home there is no gpedit.msc either to possibly allow it to run. I figure there has to be a registry key somewhere that would allow this, since you can force it with XP Pro. Anyone with experience getting this to work? _________________________ (... better days ahead)

Specifically, WuGetConfig() and WuSetConfig(), which get/set the the Windows Update Service parameters. I avoid HE like the plague, so can't tell you if it will work there, but it's worth a shot. NTDOC NTDOC Administrator Registered: 2000-07-28 Posts: 11634 Loc: Space	Yeah, this whole thing about so many different versions I think helped to make the Vista push a failure as well. Just make them all Pro versions when they make an OS and be done with it. I know there are reasons for it but I think those reasons back fired on them. Have you manually set one and watched it NOT work ? I know that the SP3 will not install automatically on it's own as I've set the WU to do all updates automatically and it is now sitting there waiting for me to install it for my workstations and won't do it for my users (who are not Admins), but it does do all the other updates on it's own.

Arend_ Arend_ MM club member Registered: 2005-01-17 Posts: 1896 Loc: Hilversum, The Netherlands	Sorry Glenn, as (very) good your UDF's are, I'm not much of a fan of the U in UDF's $;\)$ They are very handy when you need a quick solution, but I personally prefer finding out stuff myself (reinventing the wheel, helps me learn better then using other ppl's code) This is why I mostly suggest the means to find out instead of pointing towards the UDF.

The thing I wanted to test, and the thing I noticed in most of these docs is they all refer to using SUS, not AU from MS. @Apronk, hang around and keep making your suggestions. Those of us who have been around here for a while, know exactly where you are coming from... Or you can visit my website and get the UDF I wrote to sum all this up. $;\)$ Wow.. just noticed you have almost 1k posts... that seems really quick. Glenn Barnas Glenn Barnas KiX Supporter Registered: 2003-01-28 Posts: 4402 Loc: New Jersey	Arend, I'm a big fan of teaching people to fish, rather than feeding them.. $;\)$ I just knew that Allen had the capacity to take the fish, fillet it, and turn it into a meal to suit his tastes. $\:D$ While the WUSlib is available in my Kix resources page, a rather complete package, with the UDF library, sample code, and documentation is available as well as a package. That has lots of good info and examples related to WSUS, not just the UDFs. The library exposes the entire WU API, which many people aren't aware of. Arend_ Arend_ MM club member Registered: 2005-01-17 Posts: 1896 Loc: Hilversum, The Netherlands	@Allen: if you don't specify the WSUS server url it'll default to MS. @Glenn: Thats true, I forgot the post was from Allen, beginning users would just use the UDF rather then looking how it works. @Lonk: yeah the WSUS client sometimes (rarely) f*cks up, mostly installing the Windows Update Agent 3.0 fixes these issue's. It should be deployed automatically but with most SP3 PC's it doesn't always for some reason.
