I recently did a few installs of Office 2003 + proofing tools + Office 2007 compatibility pack. All system that this was done on have Excel not listed in the open with list. When I use the browse button and select excel.exe nothing happens. The file does not open and excel does not show up in the open with list. Seems to be the same problem this guys is having http://www.themssforum.com/ExcelMisc/Excel-missing-766907/

Anybody seen this before?

Edit Reason: Replaced a Dutch word with the English version.

BTW: The install was done with a GPO and a transforms file created with the custom installation wizard from the Office 2K3 resource kit. I unlinked the GPO for the compatibility pack but with only Office 2K3 and proofing tools this issue stays.

Mart,
We have Office 2003 English with some MUI (Dutch, French, German, ...).
I used the Custom Installation Wizard to create an MST file.
We did not use a GPO to distribute the package.
I also installed the "Compatibility pack for the 2007 Office system" on some computers now (not all of them).
I don't think I have seen the problem yet. At least not on my computer.

I’ll do a manual install of the MSI with the MST today and see what happens. Maybe the GPO is messing things up.

This is the way I installed:
@"\\Server\Share$\Office\Office 2003\SETUP.EXE" TRANSFORMS="\\Server\Share$\Office\Office 2003\New Custom Setup File.MST" /qb-
I also modified the file
\\Server\Share$\Office\Office 2003\FILES\SETUP\SETUP.INI
to get a chained install for the MUI's

The advantage of NOT installing via GPO is that the folder "C:\MSOCache" is created. This folder contains the installation source.
Via GPO, you don't get this cache folder. You should always keep your installation files in their original location.

Yeah, I know.

I just did a manual install and excel is also not present in the open with list but can be selected and the it is in the list. Also did a GPO install of just office 2K3 (no proofing and 2007 stuff) and this also works Going to do a Office 2K3 and proofing tools install manually and by GPO and take it from there.

It seems to be limited to a specific type of workstation. Other wksta's do not have this problem. All workstations that I installed Office 2K3 on are of the same brand and type and they all have this issue even when I copy a clean image on them. Others (several different types) work just fine.

We started to create a new image for this specific brand and type because lots of other things that should be the same in all images are very different only in the image for the systems that are given us trouble. Learned an other lesson today. Do not trust an image blindly if you did not create the image yourself.

I agree. That goes for anything else.

Regarding the local cache - there's an updated setup.exe that should be used that fixes some local cache issues:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...&displaylang=en

As you know you should deploy the Gold-version (and not a slip-streamed one) with local cache enabled (you can also specify UNC install sources in the MST if you wish), and then patch it via WSUS.

But... deploying 2003 version now seems a bit outdated?

So does using Office 2000 (as we still do).
Besides the fact that Office 2007 is sort of expensive the interface of 2007 is so different from any other version that our users would be completely lost when using it. I know I was when I first used it. I'll do a few systems with 2007 just to let the users get used to the look and feel.

mart, you should reconsider that.
giving some of the users the new version will make mess out of it \:\)

well, on the other hand, perhaps the users then can start teaching each other as more users start using it.

We buy Volume License and then downgrade and use Office 2003 for our users as well.

We had a couple more advanced users try it and they did not like 2007 either because of layout changes. Also in my opinion probably less than 10% of Office users in the World even use half the features and power of Office 2003. So aside from some "neat" features and an expensive price tag I don't see too many mission critical reasons for upgrading to Office 2007 aside from keeping Microsoft in business.

Yep I know that it could make a mess but how else would I let my users get a taste of it before using it in production. For now it will be on standalone systems that user can use every now and then on a coffee break, lunch or after office hours.
A lot of my users are kind of ignorant. They are good at what they do but everything else especially when it needs a power cord is abracadabra to them. So jumping from Office 2000 to 2007 will cause some major user issues. They even come and ask me why I need to fix the internet router right now and if I can't wait a few hours because they need to check hotmail. There is no internet now and therefore also now hotmail. The teaching each other part is my ultimate goal.

I think that does not change anything to the fact that a GPO Installation does not create a local cache folder.

I think he is talking about manual/non GPO installs. It's a setup.exe that is obviously not used in a GPO. For manual/non GPO installs it might be handy to update the setup.exe with this new version.
