PDF printer on printer server

Does anybody know about a good (and eventually free) pdf-writer printer driver that can be used for a shared printer on a printer server?

Thanks, I will certainly try it.
But at first glance, I do not see anything mentioned on the website about print sharing or a use on a printer server.
Do you use this one on a printer server?

Re: PDF printer on printer server

There are some freeware solutions that work locally in combination with something like Ghostscript but free truly generic solutions do not seem to be available. One of the best semi-automatic local solutions that I encountered was Ghostword but when you install the latest version (8) of acrobat reader it appears to break the app. How it does this I do not know. It worked perfectly for me with Office 2000 & XP and Acrobat Reader 5 through 7 but the minute Acrobat 8 was installed it would no longer work. Uninstalling and re-installing didn't help. I searched long and hard for this semi-solution to pdf production by our research team & now we have to make do with lesser apps that are barely better than manually using ghostscript to do a conversion from ps to pdf. Of course if you wish to pay there are good solutions out there.

If you do not upgrade Acrobat reader beyond version 7, Ghostword is a good solution for a small team of researchers. It is a local solution though.

Re: PDF printer on printer server

AMD,
CutePDF can be set as a shared printer. It can be installed on a client computer. But when printing, there is no prompt for a file name. The prints wait in the print queue with a status "Error".
When printing on the print server (no, not the real one, my test computer), everything works fine.
Local = OK (as expected)
Remote via shared printer = NOT OK
Do you use this driver for a shared PDF printer?

From the CutePDF FAQ http://www.cutepdf.com/support/faq.asp:
 Quote:
CutePDF Writer does not support network printer sharing.

also...
 Quote:
How to bypass Save As dialog box ,or make unattended installation?
The Custom Edition supports those features.

Re: PDF printer on printer server

Thanks Senser!
To install to a server, PDFCreator-0_9_3_GPLGhostscript.exe is needed (I presume PDFCreator-0_9_3_WithoutGhostscript.exe will also work).
If I get it right, the server console has to be logged on and the "PDF Creator - PDF Print Monitor" has to be running?
That user has to have the right to write to per example the users folder or a public folder?
If so, what about starting this console as a service?
I will give it a try starting from my computer as "test server" \:\)

See the HOWTO on the product site http://www.pdfforge.org/products/pdfcreator/documentation/howto

There is only one article - "Running PDFCreator as a service"

Re: PDF printer on printer server

Sorry Witto, I mis-read your subject/intent. Yes I meant as a local solution.

Re: PDF printer on printer server

there's a free gnu one for windows, but installed as a local printer. PDFCreator (seen at sourceforge). Really happy with that one, since we tried ScanSofts PDFCreate! (1,4) (and yes, the naming is really confusing) and that just hung when altering already existing pdf's and re-printing 'em. According to their support, the do not support printing from Adobe Reader... *_*.
So, my tip is PDFCreator ;\)
lol, Richard beat me to it \:\)

Re: PDF printer on printer server

Witto,

You can try this VMware appliance...

Acrophobia - The Network PDF Appliance

1.0.3 with firewall settings and custom anaconda. VMWare edition.

Description

Acrophobia is the easiest way to provide PDF generation capabilities to your users. Acrophobia is currently in use in businesses with 1 to 1,000+ users.

Enough marketing. Acrophobia presents itself as a network printer. When someone prints to the Acrophobia "printer", the print job is converted to PDF and e-mailed back to the user. From a user perspective, it just doesn't get any easier than that. From an admin perspective, Acrophobia is far easier to set up and support than a desktop based conversion package.

Re: PDF printer on printer server

PDFCreator is the shit. Free. Simple. Available as MSI package too. Deployed it here on all clients within 5 mins and it works like a charm. Not client/server, but that's really not necessary in most cases.
