OT - Win 2003 Server Freezing

Hi all,

I have a Win 2003 Server (standard) and it's freezing on me. I recently had a pioneer dvd writer, msde (ms desktop engine?) + sql 2000 server and sharepoint installed. I uninstalled the dvd writer, sql2000 + sharepoint (not sure how to uninstall msde) and it's still freezing.

I use vnc server on the server and I cant even vnc into it, I can only ping it and it replies but nothing else it simply freezzes so I cant use the mouse or keyboard, won't even respond to trying to manage the server (right click my comp and manage from another pc). I checked event log not much there at all, its always freezing around the 8am time period, some times 8.03 or 8.37 etc etc, different times. Any ideas?

It's a DC and its very important that I fix this problem. Many thanks!!

Cheers,
Jon

EDIT: Reply to Richard H.

Yes correct not much around the same time. (I will remote admin the server and tell you what is around that time, nothing important I think though)

Yes staff do login at that time. Over 100 workstations/laptops. (98 and xp machines)

Server is fully up to date, runs SUS server too.
Another thing, it does run a library server which runs a sql program sql anywhere i think), but it has been running for a while with no problems on this server and another. I was thinking it could be msde freezing the pc? Maybe I'll try get rid of that, isnt in add/remove programs though. Any more ideas? Thanks

FYI if it helps the server has 1 gig ram, 2 x 10k scsi 70 gig hd's, 2.4 xeon with HT. Its running SAV 8 too.

Re: OT - Win 2003 Server Freezing

Presumably there is nothing in the event logs around the time that it freezes?

Do the local staff start work at around that time? Perhaps the machine freezes when someone starts up their machine, or logs on.

Is this server (and the clients) fully up to date with MS security patches? Perhaps you have a machine which is issuing a DOS attack?

And so its been freezing today too. Nothing much in event log, I was in a remote desktop connection to the server too and it froze in the remote desktop window aswell as the server's monitor. Any ideas?

Do you by any chance have the TWEAKUI installed and / or have you modified the menu bar speed setting? This is a known issue.

Hi NTdoc,
No I have not. It actually freezes and doesnt come back to life. You can see the screen frozen, cant move mouse or keyboard. Cant even look at shares \\server some times can ping it though, cant manage it via my computer and as i said using rdesktop it froze that too!

Re: OT - Win 2003 Server Freezing

I was wondering if anyone had some clues?

I wiped the server with Win 2003 Server. It froze once again last week. I found out the UPS was going straight through without going through the battery , would this maybe make the server freeze if there was a drop in voltage or something like that?? I fixed the UPS and hasnt froze yet. I did a mem86 and another memory test for a few days with no errors. The server has 2 scsi hostraid drivers , 10krpm 72 gig, i found out one of the drives is being called "degraded" sounds like time for a rebuild. This couldnt be related though?

A degraded RAID is a really REALLY BAD thing! It is one step away from catastophic loss. Depending on what level of RAID and the specific hardware, it can have a detrimental effect on performace since it may be extrapolating the missing data.

RUN, don't walk, to the server and fix it right away!

it really sounds like your hardware is all messed up.
sounds like you got some info on that HD but my email server is also screwing up and all logs show green

Re: OT - Win 2003 Server Freezing

Well, found out the UPS was only going through direct was not going through the battery. Changed this and it hasnt missed a beat! Maybe voltage changes made the server freeze?
