Kixforms: Wish-list

I'm putting together a personal wish-list for the next release of Kixforms, heres a few ideas (some are already implemented):

KIXFORMS 2.0 TODO LIST:

- Multi-Page Bitmap Support

- Enhanced default Focus handling.

- Add Icon property to Form and Button object

- Windows 9x support

- ActiveX Server (.exe) support

- Font property support (font,size,bold,...)

- Location,Size properties

- RGB replaced with n,n,n syntax

- Cloning controls (very neat, always wanted to include that one)

- A read/write combobox

- Listboxes and comboboxes that support columns

- MousePointer / MouseIcon properties

- A menubar, dockable that is

- Form tabs

- Flat buttons

- Support for transparency in graphics

- A nice drag and drop IDE to design forms [Wink]

Shawn,

Oh, you did it now! I was waiting for this thread! [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

I ask no more than to be able to transfer my KixGUI scripts into KixForms without losing functionality. I looked into this a few months back, but there were enough things I could not transfer into KixForms to stop me. Is this still the case?

If not here's my wishlist:

KixGUI thingys
A read/write combobox
Listboxes and comboboxes that support columns
A menubar, dockable that is [Eek!]
Form tabs
Color options for everything
Flat buttons
Support for transparency in graphics
A nice drag and drop IDE to desgin forms [Razz]
Support for grouping (optionbuttons)
[Roll Eyes] A coupon redemable for 1 case of *good* Canadian beer with each download!!! I like Upper Canadian Lager. [Roll Eyes]

I'm suuuure you have enough free time to pull this off! [Big Grin] I could break down and learn VB though...

you have succestions alright...
some of them are I-need type...
don't need to much fancy (like color to everything)
but to make normal app look, we would need menus...
in the form and in the border...

how is your table-code doing shawn?

{edit}
about the progress bar...
it's easily doable with udf with even current kixforms build

Please, please, please add Windows 95/98 support. I've tried various ways of adding a GUI to Kix scripts, but they have always let me down one way or another. I thought I had found a better way several months back with KixForms, but then I discovered the lack of Windows 9x support. It is nearly worthless to me without it.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Guys, great to see feedback and ideas. Now we're talking - now were cooking with grease ... (or back-bacon, or something)...

Yeah, a control inherits it's font from it's parent. Which imho, for most applications, is a very desirable behavior. Set the font once on the form, and be done with it. The font get passed along from parent to child, like a gene [Wink] Forms that have too many fonts are generally recognised as a bad thing (I didn't say that, heard it somewhere)

Color options for everything. Kixforms supports color options for everything except the Button object.

Support for grouping (optionbuttons). Kixforms supports that.

Progressbar. Build 21 supports progressbars.

Windows 9x - Build 21

Fully functional ComboBox - Build 22

I modified the first post in thread to preserve all these ideas.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

How about being able to change the mouse pointer to an hourglass (or anything else for that matter) to indicate system activity or status. I am currently using KiXGUI for an application that automatically updates Anti-Virus software on remote workstations, the only problem is that I have to pop a 'System Busy' dialog and lock the parent form while the domain is enumerated, which isn't the best. I must admit it is more of a nice to have than a necessity, but you did ask and if implemented then I'm sure I will have to defect to Kixforms [Wink]

Oh, and how about updating the documentation so that we can all take advantage of the new features that you have already implemented. The current Word document still refers to features coming in Build 8! I know that documentation is a PITA to write, but it helps enormously.

Finally, many thanks for investing so much time in this product; the GUI libraries really add a whole new dimension to an already excellent language.

Seriously, I've been around long enough to tell the difference between your serious and non-serious suggestions. It would be cool to think that at the end of the day, one could write their own FORMS GUI designer, using just FORMS and Kixtart itself (theoretically possible given a proper object model and toolset).

But I get a real thrill out of using these tools (KIXGUI and KIXFORMS) ... Alex did an amazing job with KIXGUI and creating FORMS has been pure joy for me as well. Think the thing is - they provide a departure from the routine stuff (writing login and admin scripts) ... give us a chance to push the boundaries a little and have some fun.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Thanks!

Shawn, like I said, nothing I asked for is high priority. Rather than flat buttons, buttons that can contain graphics or rather graphics that can handle the onclick event would be nice, currently not available with KixGUI. However, I'm not complaining either. I'm as happy as a pig in sh** just being able to do this stuff. And again I apologize if KixForms has this ability and I'm just ignorant to the fact. Gotta re-read the manual. BTW, how up to date is the most recent manual? Can you provide the link yet again?

Lonkero, I still have to finish with some of the code. Like I have been waiting on the Remote Execution God to shine some light on us forever. [BTW, I found out for 100% certain that is indeed impossible to proxy out of any telnet like impersonation connection. Whether it be WMI or WSH. This from a guy who wrote one of those Programming Windows Security books. I'll update the Driving Me Insane post.] Also using Shawn's ADSI example for managing the services and the pause routine has been giving me some problems. And I have to incorporate process checking for the Netmeeting RDS service (exist? Paused? UnPause) so that launches correctly.

Fourtunatley, this will all be done by next Wed. so hang in there.

Good news is that all code is native to Kix, WMI and WSH. No external crap required, except I am going to add the option to use PSEXEC.EXE to overcome the telnet proxy issue.

The next thing that someone will have to explain is how I'm going to post this? I had a compiled installer version because it requires regisrty entries in LM and CU, shortcuts, 20+ images, and several scripts. Any ideas? Or if some has WWW/FTP hosting space for around 1.5MB that would rock.

Jim,

You could do pretty much the same with Kixforms - only thing not supported are combobox, flat button & transparent image. Forms has a clickable image control, in fact, Bryce used one to great effect in one of his most recent scripts. But I wouldn't be too modest here Jim, most of what you did here, is more a testament to your scripting flare and ability, than the tools used.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Lonkero,

You rock! I'll certainly take you up that offer. It'll be interesting to see where the script goes when it's opened to the public!

Shawn,

That was it! The combobox was what I needed as it's intergral to this script. The combo saves a history of the hostname or IP that is entered in the name box. They are 'linked' so to speak to overcome the readonly issue of KixGUI. Info is entered in the textbox and stored in the reg which the combo uses to populate itself. Selecting an item from the combo populates the textbox which is what the script reads from to perform the desired action. Anyhow, I belive that when I went to rewrite into Kixforms that was what I needed.

Thanks for nice comment! The ultimate BB people need to include a ::BLUSH:: tag. BTW, if you do search on my member number, you'll most likely find a topic associated with every facet of this script, including the one above. We really have a wonderfully helpful community here; by far the most receptive, active and helpful I've ever seen.

The one thing that would be really nice is the support for columns in the combo and list boxes. I found that after the history gets populated with hostnames, they all start to look alike. So I tacked on a optional description to allow the user to make note. It cheesy though. The hostname is a reg data entry and the value being the description. They get combined in the combobox like this "HOSTNAME :: This is Jim's
box." Then I do a Split() on "::" to seperate them again. Ducttape solution no doubt. [Smile]

what it actually did was add some 1M to reg-size on just one c-class subnet.

and I didn't use it for anything else but clientname ip,mac,winver,officever...

about the space... I think 100MB bandwith is enough, cause that was all our university can offer to homenets.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Lonkero,

The reg data is not really dynamic and does not populate based on the network. Entries are made manually and stored there for future reference and use. That's a great idea though. Poll all active boxes on the network and populate a menu. That can be stored in an temp array. I think I ask Alex to incorporate a WIN32 Network Browser method, don't remember the outcome?

Shawn,
Sorry to keep adding, but tack that on list too. File, Folder, and Network browsers.

No convinving necessary, I was thoroughly impressed with KixLander and Light brite. I was also working on a user manager when you submitted yours. We used Enterprise Administrator until the W2K active directory came along and then sent us NetIQ's DRA tool which is SOOOOOOOOOOO slow. The project got dropped indefinitely. Recreate what wheel I said? [Smile] See pic below.

However, this project will be rewritten for Forms as soon as the combo is ready. That was the original intent due to optionbox issue and read-only combo in KixGUI. Also from what I remember, Alex was taking a break on kixgui development for a while.

Speaking of SCSI, can you believe that Seagate shipped me a $5000 external Viper Ultrium LTO today, and didn't include a frickin' $10 terminator??? [Mad] Throw me a frickin' bone here. I'd love to meet the accountant who made that call...

Lonkero,

You were right! Someone or something unplugged the internal ribbon cable to the onboard SCSI... [Wink] Oddly enough the manual calls for the terminator and all of the Quantum DLTs ship with one as well? Learn something every day! Makes sense considering I can't remember the last time I had to fuss with HDD termination. I need to get under the hood more often... Thanks!

Jens,

Unfortunately we're not running it on an Ultra160 bus which is where I think they were claiming was required to really see the boost. I'll let you know next week how it compares to the DLT 40/80's. IMHO, Compaq (Jim shivers) has a nice single drive rack SDLT 110/220 library that holds 26 tapes for $8k that can be upgraded to two drives for another $4k. Definitely worth the money! I HATE DOING TAPES! Can someone please write a script that changes tapes for me? In fact this may merit a .dll [Smile] Or even better, my own personal mini-me!

1st bad impression is that LTO tapes use stickers... Probably to jive with barcode stickers? I like the cards DLTs use. Not sure what SDLT is using, but knowing the DLT IV can be read by SDLT drives, I'd bet they haven't changed.

Kixforms Build 22

The syntax for setting the FORM ICON is:

$Form.Icon = "FullPathToICO"

Caveat: the next major version of Kixforms will have a new method for doing this:

$Form.Icon = $Form.LoadIcon("FullPathToICO")

Also fixed that show(0) thingy.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

I originally decided to develop with KiXGUI as opposed to Kixforms due to differences in functionality (comboboxes, progress bars etc.). However, times have changed and due to Shawn’s dedication, Kixforms has marched on and most issues have either been already addressed or are currently being worked on. The only problem remaining is the out of date documentation.

Therefore, rather than wait for Shawn to do everything for us [Wink] I would like to suggest the creation of a web site listing all the Kixform commands and their syntax. I would be more than happy to create and host (via a free ISP) the content, however I would need a little help in compiling the up-to-date command list. At the end of the day, Kixforms is Shawn’s baby and therefore the decision is ultimately his, however I would be interested in other KiXtarter’s opinions. Please note that if this does get the green light, the web-site would not appear tomorrow as there would be a significant amount of work involved.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Another suggestion (this feature may already be in Kixforms, but just in case) ... I have an app which requires the user to enter an IP address, therefore I have provided 4 text boxes in a row for the data entry. However, using KiXGUI there is no obvious way to enforce a maximum number of characters in each box, or a data type, so the user can type anything they like which then has to be checked afterwards. It would be nice to limit them to a maximum of three characters and numbers only via some form of text box 'template'.

it not currently possible in the box itself but you can do it in event looping...

$textbox.text=left($textbox.text,3)
endif
$=execute($form.doevents())

That's pretty slow. I'm using SCSI Seagate NS20 Travan tape drives and they average 60MB/min for a local backup and 30MB/min for backups through a switched 100MBits connection using Veritas Backup Exec and the Backup Agents on the remote servers.

I would have hoped for at least a couple of 100MB/min on the minimum side (unless the network connection is the bottleneck)

The network is fully switched 100Mb with SX fiber backbones; that's not the problem. Could it be the Dual P-Pro 200mhz system? [Mad] Or maybe the PIII 350 "development" desktop, that runs NT Server? [Mad]

Bottom line remains, WHO BUYS GATEWAY SERVERS? [Confused] Arcserve sucks too!

We're still testing though.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Jim: Be aware of a feature of 64bit/66MHz PCI slots. If a motherboard has both 66MHz and 33MHz PCI slots, then the introduction of even a single 33MHz PCI card will throttle the PCI bus down from 66MHz to 33MHz for all slots. However, 64bit and 32bit PCI slots can co-exist without any problem.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

wow!
how to overcome that?
even netcards integrated to motherboard use the silly 33...

this is good information though as my boss is thinking some server builders like comebaq are more reliable than the ones I suggested with double the performance...
getting all the guns and will hit him again.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

AFAIK, there are boards out there with separate PCI buses, they would solve the problem. I don't know how integrated NICs affect the PCI bus speed of the PCI bus connected to the PCI slots.

I've read about it on StorageReview.com because I was looking into options for RAID cards. There was a discussion about whether a 64bit/33MHz card would be faster than a 32bit/66MHz card or a 64bit/66MHz card and how mixing all those different PCI cards affect PCI bus speeds. The consensus was that a 64bit/33MHz RAID card in combination with 32bit/33MHz NICs is as fast as a 64bit/66MHz RAID becaue of the PCI bus speed drop-down.

I also found that 3Ware just released a 12-channel ATA-RAID card and is about to release a 16-channel ATA-RAID card. Imagine this thing as a fileserver in RAID5 with some monster IDE drives (16 channels = 1 hot-spare + 15 RAID5 = 14*160GB = 2.24TB), should be enough for one's MP3 collection or ripped DVD collection [Smile]

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

went and red the specs...
It has own processor and as such is a real raid card not just emulator.
that also makes it usable for other things than just file storage in fileserver.

you can even listen the mp3's from those drives without system hang...

wow. I quess I have to re-think my current linux server scenario... currently have software raid on those...

Back to the topic: Kixforms Wish-list! If it's not already possible i would like balloonhelp when placing the mouse over: optionbox, commandbutton, listbox, etc ?? If possible, could someone mail me how ?

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

you mean like in html code the images have alt?

I would like to see that too as it reduces the need for any readme.
haven't seen any code implementing that and don't think it's in forms yet.

Since im a quite a noob when it comes to these things, the documentation is a big issue.

i also need a progress bar, but i read that its already implemented, just not in the doco yet.

/me waits patiently

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Since this is the wish list, i would like to add some stuff (if not already implemented):

1. An extra attribute of listbox to determine # of pixels an element would be,and use this to add a horizontal scroll bar.

2. An extra attribute to InputBox saying it is a passwordbox.

Answer on Lonkero's question: yes. Like ALT on HTML and balloonhelp on Winhoze [Wink]

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Jan,

I have a couple of potential solutions for the ListWidth issue.

1) Kixforms TNG will have two new properties called TextWidth and TextHeight. They return the Width and Height (respectively) of a string, given the current font setting (Name,Size,Bold). Can be used in a loop to determine the largest pixel width required.

2) In a subsequent release, will implement two new properties called PreferredWidth and PreferredHeight. This will automatically calculate the pixel width of the longest string (PreferredWidth) and the sum of the Height of all strings (PreferredHeight).

Hope this turns the trick. Kixforms TNG is just days away. Just finishing-off some imaging development and almost finished creating a "short-list" of objects, properties, methods and events. Will advise asap.

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

Shawn,

Great. I'm really looking forward to KiXforms TNG! I programmed around the pixel problem in a listbox, and i've noticed that for a inputbox, password characters could be set. By now, you've received an example of what i did with KiXforms (feel free to post some of it) [Smile]

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

mmm...
some days, I'm still fighting with the cmh-builder and the m$ help does not actually help at all.
all I want to do is automatically create a chm file and if there is any related text/html-files, add them too...

this stupid chm...

ahh .. found it ! (better than starting a new thread)

How about Multipage support ?
Or is that the same as punkie requests (Tabs) 2 replys before ?

Re: Kixforms: Wish-list

I also have one wish.
listview does not show all my fields as it has somekind of limit.
if I put all fields to width like 100 and make say 100 columns it does not show the last ones.

{edit}
so the wish is to make it support greater width.

also multisheet support would be fancy but this issue is more important.

multipage?
mm... it's not for form but more like frames...

anyway, now I get what you are asking [Wink]

I've asked that too before but as you can see, it's not easy to understand the question [Big Grin]

anyway, I'm with this too.
