4.21 Release Candidate is here

from ruud:
quote:

This is a 'fix-only' release to iron out several (minor) glitches in
4.20.

Fixes/enhancements in 4.21:
- Fixed: COM automation exception handling
- Fixed: MOVE of a single file or directory did not reset @ERROR
- Fixed: recursive COPY/MOVE/DEL with drive in source did not operate on sub-directories
- Fixed: COPY to non-existing directory
- Fixed: @PRIV now returns 'ADMIN' if running in system context

Note: as no new functionality was added, the manual will not be updated.

the zip can be downloaded from: http://www.gwspikval.com/jooel/files/KiX2001_421rc1.zip

If no new issues found with the fixes, when is the anticipated release?

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

Dear Lonkero,

We aren't talking about a final release. We are using the specific
classification of Ruud. Also the on our "kix downloads" page is
talking about KiXtart 4.21 rc 1 and "release candidate 1".

Also we doesn't create a new topic with this information, but simple our info
to it. Also the subject shows what we are discussing here.
greetings.

Jooel,

Good point. I would be hesitant to "release into the wild" until we have the stamp of approval.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

we have.
as long as we state it's RC.

anyway, MCA, don't take me wrong.
I was talking just about the zip name.

you already changed it, so why not also add the rc part in there...

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

Dear,

Ruud was using by himself the wkix32.zip notation with only modified files in it.
We have add the kx16.dll, kx32.dll, kx95.dll & kxrpc.exe from kixtart 4.20 to it.

Not the name is important. The contents is important. It contains also Ruud's
release note about this release candidate.

greetings.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

The difference being that wqhen RUud sent it out, it was to experienced beta testers. When releasing it to the public, greater care should be exercised.

It is very easy for the files to become separated from the documentation.

I have to wonder why you Express package something that is in beta testing.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

Dear,

Another part of Ruud's mail was
quote:

Please feel free to share this build on your websites, but do make sure
to label it a 'Release Candidate'.

If your feedback on RC1 is positive, the final build of 4.21 will be
released within the next two weeks..

For that reason it isn't any problem we put in our site.
greetings.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

MCA,
You are missing the point. It's not that you posted it to your site, it is your choice of filenames.
quote:
- kix421.zip (only kixtart.doc file not included)
- kix421update.exe
- kix421registry.exe
- wkix421update.exe

Nothing in the filenames indicate that it is only a 'Release Candidate'.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

Dear Les,

It isn't a problem for us to create installation package. The benefits is that
beta testers must not change very much in their scripts. Also they can downgrade
with the same ease.

During the many alphas, betas and release candidates we get some requests about
"why no package of this temporary release available".

Publishing already now as package are the fixes Ruud made. It are only fixes and
no new things. You can see it also as a kind of second final candidate of pre-
vious release. Ruud doesn't want to have the same situation between build 98 and
99, which returns as @kix value the same value.
Of course it doesn't mean we are following always all alphas and betas updates.

For us the name isn't a big issue. Site contains enough information about what
kind of release it is. Also kixtart itself shows that it is a release candidate.
Les, we were talking about "When releasing it to the public, greater care
should be exercised.". Of course we subscribe that point of view, but Ruud
explicit writes "Please feel free to share this build on your websites, but do
make sure to label it a 'Release Candidate'." and what did we do.

We have never distributed version with your qualification. We respect the
way Ruud want to distribute his program.

greetings.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

I replied to the post on SL

http://www.scriptlogic.com/support/forums/display_message.asp?mid=6572

The DEL command in KiXtart 2001 4.21 Release Candidate 1 does not set @ERROR even when dealing with one single file.

$myfile='C:\TEMP\TEST.TXT'
DEL $myfile
? 'File deletion returned error is: '+@ERROR+' '+@SERROR

If you run this over and over again you will keep getting

File deletion returned error is: 0 The operation completed successfully.

Even though the file does not exist.

v4.12 sets the @ERROR to 2 like it should.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

so, AFAIK (I like that shortening), there seems to be general issue in these file commands.

and mostlikely it's about the new enchanged stuff that also removed partly the working code.

affected commands thus far:
-copy
-move
-del

these commands indeed are highly related and it can be that simple problem in one can fail all of them.

expected fix is the forth coming RC-2 (expected) but there is no news on the timetable of that.

any new bug-reports (small or big) related to the 4.2x line are welcome.

Re: 4.21 Release Candidate is here

KiXtart v4.21-RC2 correctly handles this code now.

Break On
$myfile='C:\TEMP\TEST.TXT'
DEL $myfile
'File deletion returned error is: '+@ERROR+'  '+@SERROR
