Kixtart times out at remote site.

Hello all,
A friend turned me on to Kixtart about a year or two ago. He set it up on my local server so it would map drives for users based on the group they were affiliated with in AD. For the most part it works with out any problems what so ever. My network has grown and now I have a VPN with two sites. I have a second Windows 2003 AD server at the off site location. I know little to no programming and have run into a problem with the script timing out at my remote site. This happens at random times but seems to be more often on computers that are used by multiple users. I found when this happens I can sometime get the script to load by deleting temp folders and stuff. This may have nothing to do with why it works after I do that but being I am not a programmer and know nothing about scripts it was the best I could offer and it seems to work.
So I am here to try to fined a solution to this on going problem. Here is what I have and also the latest thing I have tried to implement to fix the problem.

Users have login.bat file attached to there account profile to launch once they log in. This .bat file reads this..
START /W \\AD1\NETLOGON\KIX32.EXE MAIN.TXT

What I tried to do was make a new .bat file that pointed to the remote server so it would get the files from there rather then come back to the main office to get the kix32.exe and main.txt files.
The new file was named hilliard.bat and the code in it reads..
START /W \\Hilliard-Server\NETLOGON\KIX32.EXE MAIN.TXT

I then changed the wording in the users profile to read hilliard.bat.
Now when the user tries to log in I would think it would read this new file and grab the files it needed from the remote server and hopefully not time out.
Well it didn’t work. In fact it didn’t even load at all.
So maybe I am going about this the wrong way completely.
Can anyone give me some Ideas on what to do or try next?
Thanks in advance.
Bill

Re: Kixtart times out at remote site.

you could change your original bat to something like this:
START /W %logonserver%\NETLOGON\KIX32.EXE MAIN.TXT

Re: Kixtart times out at remote site.

That seems to get the same results as making a second file.
Nothing loads.

hmm...
you should add a pause line to the batch file to make sure it is running at all.

Is KIX32.EXE and MAIN.TXT on the remote server?

Re: Kixtart times out at remote site.

Ok after rebooting the client computer I was able to get the script to run with changing original bat to

START /W %logonserver%\NETLOGON\KIX32.EXE MAIN.TXT
But it stills grabs from AD1 the main server and not the one on site.

Jooe: I am not sure how to put a pause line in maybe you can give me a example.

Gargoyle: yes all files are on the remote server. The server does not seem to have a problem replicating files.

Code:

START /W %logonserver%\NETLOGON\KIX32.EXE MAIN.TXT
pause

Re: Kixtart times out at remote site.

Maybe add

Echo %logonserver%

so you can see that they are looking at the correct server.

Re: Kixtart times out at remote site.

Well I must admit I feel a bit foolish for two things now..
1. Pause means...well it means pause! duh
2. I failed to look at the file permissions on the new hilliard.bat file I made before writing this post. Note to self remember to look at file permissions...

Anyways it works the way it should now that users have the proper permissions to the new file. Thank you guys for helping me figure this out. And keeping me humble.

Bill

P.S
Is there a way to have the .bat file search for the fasted AD server so I don’t have to split up my users? Maybe this should be a new post….

now some ad guru could get online and explain something, but theoretically, machines should always automatically log you on to the logonserver that responds fastest.
