I've had no luck re-directing my start menu's per PC config, so wondered if it's possible with a script. I already have a kix script assigning printers to rooms [that users logon from]: if $room/ if $client so could I tap into that?? TIA msn[at]newtown-hs.powys.sch.uk |

how you wanna redirect your startmenu? why you don't use policy? |
I currently use group policy to re-direct all users to 1 start menu - but I have a growing number of redundant icons from different configs, so I wan't to assign about 4 different start menu's. |
according to group membership? 4 different for each type or 4 starmenu's for one user? |
Quote: no. I currently have 1 for all students, and 1 for staff [in sub-domain] Quote: Yes! - 4 start menu's for 1 user |

would you like to see my printer script? |
not really. just trying to imagine the layout of that potential startmenu... |
what about this: del "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\*.*" $room=SubStr(@wksta,2,2) $client=SubStr(%clientname%,2,2) Select Case ($room="19") copy "\\server\room19\start menu\Programs\*.*" "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\*.*" endselect |

If you already use GPOs, why not do it all with GPOs? |
Quote: I would if I could Les - but I can't work out how to do it! I can re-direct from a policy on the user container/ OU to one start menu, but I want 4 or 5 start menus for all users, if you see what I mean. Start Menu's for 4 or five different software images. At the moment I have quite a few blank icons for stuff not available on all computers. Technology are just about to come onto the network with a totally diferent install, which'd make it all too confusing. If you know/ can think of a way of doing this, please let me know |

How can one user/group have more than one Start Menu? Do you mean 4 or 5 Start Menus for 4 or 5 groups? You can easily use GPOs to assign Start Menus by group. Just have a separate GPOs for each group. How hard can it be? What am I missing? |

This is a school and 1000 users use any of 220 PC's - currently with 4 distinct software images - so yes - I need 4 start menu's for each user ... geddit! |

student a - uses PC in IT to do IT coursework. Next lesson in technology IT he uses cad/cam software to build his latest invention. Lesson 3 is in the library he uses the only licenced copy of Encarta and a few other library only programs to do some research. It's nice he only has 1 username and home folder to keep all his school work in, life would be too complicated otherwise ... don't you agree?? |
No, I don't get it. How can one user have more than one Start Menu at one time? What am I missing? |
a different start menu assigned to each PC the user logs onto. Just like it's be if we had no re-directed start menu [hey - wait a minute! *just kidding* ] |
student a does not have the ability to be in 3 places at the same time [to my knowledge!]. Come that day I'll hang up my boots! |
So finally you admit it! One (and only one) Start Menu for each user at a given logon session but you want the Start Menu to vary depending which computer he/she logs on to. Am I on the right track? If so, it can still be done by GPOs... only you need more of them. Group the computers by classroom in separate OUs and assign separate GPOs to each OU. so, if the student is in the IT lab, he/she gets the IT Start Menu. How hard can it be? |

fireworks light the sky!!! You GEDDIT! Yeah - I tried that - doesn't work. Students in thier OU, Computers in a tree of thier own, in folders by configuration. Folder re-direction set on computer config OU and not on Student OU. GPO linked, GPO applied to student OU. Nothing. |
Smart Ass! Not as smart as you think. Computers in one OU, Users in another... not a prob! RTFM loopback GPO processing! It will reprocess the User portion of the GPO in the computer OU. |
hope no offence taken Les - just trying to keep my sense of humor about this [and not bore you into the bargain!} Apologies if any taken - was not my intention. Consultant with me Wednesday said nothing about loopback processing. Neither did my 6 posts to MS expert sites today yeild such knowledge. Thanks - i'll try that - [Tuesday ] [gets out BFM] You're a star! |

LOL No offense taken... actually enjoyed it |

You can also have greater granularity by having multiple GPOs on one OU and then ACL in separate groups. Just click the Security tab and follow your nose. |

Eh, waddup with the multiple personalities? You signup as Mark, then you reply as anonymous and m8rk_ and now I see you signed up as M8rk. tsk, tsk |

Oops! Used a different PC in the first place, then forgot i'd signed up and my email addy for m8rk must've been wrong 'coz I never got a password! Will try following my nose!;) Thanks for the help! 'ere goes... |
