new server and UBBthreads

Because the server KiXtart.org was hosted on went down to many times, we transferred the site to a new server and new co-location.
We also upgraded the bulletinboard to UBBthreads, so it should be faster then ever!

Sorry for the inconvience!

Have fun!

Henri

not just that it's new but not even as close easy as classic.

k, weird thing is that the board wants to screw images (avatars)
instead of letting them be, it forces them to be squares...
uhm.

weird thing is also that getting to the frontpage is "hidden" in the middle of upper panel.

Dear,

At the bottom of forum index you can specify what you want to see. A possible
selection is "active in the last day". For members it is also possible to use
their own time offset.

And on the main index you must click on Past 24 hours for viewing
recent messages.

When you are using your profile settings you can specify your own color skin for the board.

Dear,

The result of some short checks shows:
  • different languages can be used for displaying
  • shows more information about topics based on your our time offset and with your own skin
  • specifies which threads are your favorites and receives email about replies
  • receive a daily archive of all posts via your real email address
  • a lot of users reports on our site can be created by yourself

Of course it shows also some 'disadvantages'
  • way of replying isn't the same
  • URL links in your posts are using the old URL layout
  • your signature may contain 100 characters

greetings.

Henri, Is the time current on the server? I tried to use:

Current server time is: 17/11/2003 15:18
Choose your time offset in hours (..,-2,-1,0,1,2,..)

to get the current time but the server seems to be 30 minutes off. Are you is some type of half hour time zone? The system will not take anything except full hours.

Re: new server and UBBthreads

Dear,

We have searching through the feedback of other site, who have migrated from UBB.Classic to UBB.threads.
The goal was "what can be the possible problems with UBB.threads".
Based on the information we can create a list of advantages and disadvantages, but also we can show how this UBB.Thread can be used.

Advantages
  • as member you can make other post one of your favorites.
  • as UBB.Classic board grows it will get slower and functions such as "search" will be next to impossible to run unless you have a dedicated server (posts aren't stored in a database, so server load can be immense). For that reason: huge UBB.Classic boards ... most have been switching off to UBB.threads, or even UBB.x of late.
  • so fast en efficient!
  • UBB.threads blows UBB.Classic out of the water as far as performance is concerned.
  • search options are much better and amazingly fast. For someone it was the reason for migration. Also he found search capabilities of UBB.Classic poor.
  • UBB.Threads has a lot more to offer as UBB.Classic and the performance is amazing.
  • once you take the compression into account (which seems to be around a 90% savings per page), UBB.Threads should almost certainly save quite a bit of bandwidth. (Henri, what did you choose?)
  • from the software side UBB.Threads now has a powerful tool in the form of templates which you can modify to customize the look and feel of your board. The good news from the POV of a UBB.Classic user is that you'll be able to make it resemble UBB.Classic very closely through a combination of Template and CSS adjustments. Here's a site which most-closely resembles the Classic look IMO: example classic look
  • we were able to maintain our UBB.Classic look by creating a new stylesheet and altering templates.
  • UBB.Threads is very fast and highly customizable for both site owner and readers.
  • functions such as 'past 24' are nice and useful in Classic, but Threads is moving full steam ahead and now that the engine is as fine-tuned as it can get, I think we can expect a lot of improvements with regards to new features as well as the general look & feel of the board.
  • the "Who is online" feature turned on on UBB.Classic is a very resource intensive process. Also the preformance will be influence by "How many posts per page?", "Are images permitted?", "What UBB.Classic features are enabled?", "Are system wide searches enabled?", etc.

Some disadvantages
  • is there any way to disable the case-sensitive UBB code? i.e. [ b] ... <> [B]
  • lots of complaints from users about navigation
  • UBB.x has more of the look and feel of UBB.classic, but this version isn't for free. Not for free means: infopop is hosting those sites.
  • somewhat limited and underdeveloped control-panel.
  • there are numerous features in UBB.Classic that are not in UBB.Threads, and some of them are sorely missed.

Some other remarks we found

Some very nice examples about personal look of UBB.Thread boards:

Conclusion: with the recent discussions about upgrading this site we see that a great amount of things are possible. Things which were impossible with the UBB.Classic software.
greetings.

How to get a connect with your favourite site, when it had changed from IP-address.
1. ping -a www.kixtart.org

no, I mean no BETTER.

let me explain.
to make on upgrade, you need to know where you are going.
I remember we had a discussion that there is a lot of board softs avail and that some are fancy.
but we never had a real discussion of what is good soft and what in it is better and that who agrees and should talk to henri about this option etc.

so, this was kinda the best option to the knowledge and nobody can cry for shakened milk.
anyway, I know I suggested him to look at the options and got a response "I've paid for this, I use this"
so, I will either swallow my dissappointment with the board choice and decide this was the best option or not use the board.
(quess that is why I decided not to be online consistently anymore)

The more I use this new board, the more I like it. It does take some getting used to but that's expected. To be hosest, I see this move as being just the start-point of much better things to come. Looking at some of the other UBB.Thread boards there seems to be a lot customization, tweaking and even a host of addons that we can implement down the road (I'm kinda thinking that an online chat area would be very usefull - for realtime assistance) ... my two cents, but getting more and more enthusiastic every day.

Re: new server and UBBthreads

shawn... well, ja.
but you basta can't deny that you miss the good old "today's active topics", can you?

as UBB.threads ain't topic centered, getting a nice list of last reply to each topic needs some manual work.

and the search ain't helping either.
it has no "subject" search element...

these have nothing to do with customization but the software and db layout itself, thus we will carry the pain forever.

Indeed, i really DO miss the old "todays active topics" ... the new one is way too much information and dis-orgainzed - it's the only thing that's stopping me from "loving" this new board. So your saying there is no way to customize any of this stuff (from an admin stand-point) ?

sure, we could make a direct query to the database for today's active posts and do a "where subject is $var or 're:'+$var"

Shawn/Others -

Have you been over to http://threadsdev.com ?

As Shawn said: there are some MODS available. Generally speaking with Mods, you can apply them, but may have to pull and re-apply when doing updates. But, some of them are pretty cool:
PayPal Addon - I know no donations here.

Graemlins - How about some avatars?

Calendar on Front Page

Spell Check 1.2 - I could use this one from time to time.

6.3 Mods - whole list of mods available.

One of the things I really do like is the immediate preview before posting. It really does eliminate extra edits.

kent - i already set that to "collapsed threads" no I am refering to collapsed threads in the new "todays active topics" area (really: posts from last 24 hours thingy) ... don't like how all the threads are broken-out by reply, like the old way where modified topics would just move to the head of the list. As it is now, there is way too much info in that list. Think this would be a global board setting (if it existed).

Re: new server and UBBthreads

Dear,

indeed an interesting discussion. indeed we get more and more enthusiastic every day
and indeed the way this board is presenting the "latest topics" isn't very clear.
to bypass this problem we jump to each forum. it shows exactly those topics which
were updated. of course we don't see the first line of latest new post.

also those links shows that you can customize this board in such a way you wanted.
our problem is, that we suppose that Henri don't want so far. in the past we saw
something like that with a date-format problem. the solution suggestion was very
small, but never implemented.

also a very good thing is, that Henri is trying to keep this site up and running
all the time. additional hardware and software were implementing to prevent possible
problems.

our SUGGESTION is first to make a list of possible board changes before implementing
them on an ad-hoc base. also it will be very well, when everyone getfamiliar with
the new layout. in an earlier reaction we had collect all kind of comment on the
UBB.Thread already (see this link new server and UBBthreads).
greetings.
