Hi, Can anyone suggest what might be causing KIX32.exe to crash only on a few PC's. They are running the same script, yet some machines have problems. I think it maybe the code, but though I would ask here first.

Basically an event log is created and the user receives a message to say KIX32.EXE is closing.

Faulting application kix32.exe, version 4.62.0.0, faulting module , version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

Any ideas? Likely to just be the code, although only happens on some PC's.

Welcome to KORG!

Couple of questions:
Is Kix32 local to the PC or on the NetLogon share?
Is the code Tokenized?
What O/S and SP level?

Yes Kix32.exe is saved on the domain controller Netlogon share

No all scripts are clear script text

All PC's that error are running Windows XP SP3, with up to date patches.

Any help would be appreciated. I could post the code if it would help. Just thought someone may have experienced this. Antivirus causing issues etc?

Try to figure out what is failing. I would go to one of the problem systems, mount the netlogon share and run a few short scripts. For instance:
 Code:
"hello" ?
and
 Code:
@PRODUCTTYPE ?

Just some simple things to see if kix itself runs. If so, start moving on to some more complex things. If not, need to figure out why it is failing.

Building on what Brad suggests, try running the same simple tests as login scripts (test user account pointing to the test script for login) as well as interactively after logon.

FYI - I just worked with a client in Australia where scripts failed during logon but worked after, only on a handful of systems. Something corrupt in the workstation config (XP SP3 as well) caused the environment to become corrupt/empty only during login, causing the script to fail to run properly and throw errors. There weren't enough systems failing to bother diagnosing further and the workstations were re-imaged, so I can't offer any real solution. It was a strange problem and it would be good to rule out.

And to build on Glenn's suggestion. I have seen where logging in as a different user on the same machine, did not show the same problems. Rebuilding the user's profile has also worked.

I have seen this before. If memory serves me correct, its a profile issue. Delete the profile and the computer seems to work just fine thereafter! I suspect its some orphaned temp files or something messing up the kix execution process. Anyway deleting the profile seems to fix the problem when its very rarely occurred.

Yes I forgot to mention this too. Some users can log into the same PC and not have an issue. Thanks for your feedback guys. Will let you know how I get on with your advice.

Hi guys,

Found the problem. It was to do with adding printers with KIXTART. Strange one really. Basically some of the network printers being added to the user profile were using ports other than Direct TCP/IP/Local Ports, we have a customised port for a particular printer that errored for some users. As soon as we changed the port on this printer to a Direct TCP/IP the error disappeared.

Strange how it mattered to KIXTART what the port the printer was printing to.

Thanks again guys!!!

what you mean other than tcp/ip/local ports.
printers shared on the server and connected with addprinterconnection() are other than what you listed.
did you run a setup for the printer or how it got added?

Glad that you got your problem sorted out craigt. Not quite sure how you customised the port, but kixtart does work with a printer mapped to the server which is the best way to do it for print queue management. You might also want to try different versions of kixtart to see if its a bug with the version that you are using.
