I have kixtart running in a windows 2000 server and I have attached 4 windows xp pro. workstations, I need some code to add to script to add a Dlink print server. This Dlink print server it needs to create a port to configure itself for it to work. [Confused]
Thanks for your time.

Why would you need a script for that. If you have a Win2K printserver, you only need to add it once on the printserver.

Do you use XP SP1?

probably you cann't install the printer because there is a restriction.

If it is, watch your local policies: user configuration\administrative templates\control panel\printers\point and print restictions.

How is it configured? If it is "Not Configured" you cannot add printers with unknown printerdrivers.

Set the policy to disabled

ja, XP sucks.
even with power user rights one can't install a printer for his own usage!

That's why you have to set the XP SP1 local policy: "user configuration\administrative templates\control panel\printers\point and print restictions" to disabled instead of not configured.....

no, that's why XP is shit.

what you think, do I start using .pol files for XP just because it's shit?
no, I say every user who has got XP that there is nothing to do.

this is one of the ways to keep those out from the house.
other way is that my co-workers keep making the users local admins on XP's which helps quite a lot.

Why should you make people local admin?? With AD there isn't a problem. If you don't have AD (Like the company where I'm stationed)then you have a Challenge! This company has +/- 2000 workplaces.

We have captured the local policy setting by Wise. The problem is that you have to install it with administrator credentials. A not known colluege of mine has made a runas tool which makes first an encrypted file which contains account, password and file location. The logonscript installs the Wise package.

ja.
that is the reason.
too much work.
lot simpler to make every user on XP a local admin.

if they screw the machine, simple ghosted image will fix that in couple of minutes.

That is my office as well. Everyone is local admin on their own PC... The logon script deploys all software apps that and given user needs beyond the baseline, and configures all settings.

I whack the machine with a F12 at boot, and do a Network Boot and hit it with an image. then I come back in about 30 minutes and rename it using the netdom script, and that is it...

btw.. this policy works for over 2000 machines used by state employees.. there is usually only 1 or 2 reimages per week... for my segment I have about 1 per month and that is usually due to personnel changes

Yep, I understand... like good old W9x... A company full of kazaa, ICQ, mp3's, illegal software etc... Usings kixscripts that logs all these kinds of shit and send the logfiles to the managers....

Only the ICT department is outsourced to the company i work for.....So: Itil, Sla's Slr's requests for change, change managers, problem managers, workplace coordinators, politics, blablabla
