Release notes for KiXtart 2010 (version 4.63)

New functionality/enhancements:

1) Updated @PRODUCTTYPE to support Windows 8 and removed trailing spaces from some of the values.

2) Fixed AScan issue with arrays starting with an empty string

3) Fixed InStr to return 0 if an empty search string is specified

4) Fixed issue with WrapAtEOL being reset after KiXtart was SHELLed

5) Enhanced SetDefaultPrinter so that it sets the printer name using the original case.

6) Fixed bug in FormatNumber()

It looks like ScriptLogic may no longer wish to actively support KiXtart - their URL redirects back to the site here.

I am wondering why the current release on KiXtart.org in the download page is 2.62 and not 2.63. I am running 2.63 in my production environment now without problems.

For new user it would be nice to be able to download the newest version without having to seek it up.

In the 2.x series the last version released that I'm aware of was the following.
After that the 3.x series started.

kix16-233.zip
KIXTART.EXE 12/15/1997

I have a couple of questions about 4.63 and the Operating Systems it supports.

Firstly, I see that 4.63 supports Windows Server 2012. I have downloaded it and it does indeed work. However, the @ProductType macro is returning "Windows 6.2 / 3" whereas I was expecting something like the format it returned for Windows Server 2008 eg "Windows Server 2008 R2".

Secondly, the release notes say that it won't work on Windows 2000. However I have tried it and it seemed to work fine. Could someone please explain the dependencies? Perhaps it relies on a version of some DLL or runtime that we have installed on the Windows 2000 server that I tested. This is important because my script runs on tens of thousands of systems and these are a mix of Operating Systems so I need to know if 4.63 will fail on the Windows 2000 servers.

Both of your questions are addressed in the beta section...
http://www.kixtart.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=3&page=1

First question. Will likely be fixed in the next build.
http://www.kixtart.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=206102#Post206102

Second question. Kix does not rely on any dll. It has to do with the Visual Studio the exe is built with. Right now I believe Ruud is building the exe with VS2010 which supports XP and up.

Hi Allen, thanks for your response. However it does not explain why 4.63 worked on a Windows 2000 server that I tested it on. I also looked to see what version we are running on around 500 Windows 2000 servers and it is 4.61.

According to the release note (copied below), versions 4.60 and up are not supported on Windows 2000. So how come it works?

IMPORTANT NOTICE: current versions of Visual Studio no longer support Windows 9x, Windows NT 4 or
Windows 2000. As a result, KiXtart 2010 versions 4.60 and up are also no longer
supported on these Windows versions. Running the executable on these versions
will produce the following error: ".EXE expects a newer version of Windows."

- Steve

There are some issues with Windows 2000 support. Although the compiler Ruud is using does no longer support Win2K in some situations it still works. We had two Win2K servers left and on both servers it worked if you started it manually after logon but on one of them it also worked during logon. Both servers were at the same SP level and fully up to date with patches.

The safest way would be to keep 4.61 in place for the Win2K servers and the latest release for Win2K3 and up. You can just rename the exe to Kix461.exe, Kix462.exe, etc…, start with 4.61 just to check the OS and switch to the correct version depending on the outcome.

To be honest, I don't have a single 2000 server or workstation to test on anymore. But based on posts made here over the years, (and possibly some tests of my own), I'm pretty sure 4.61 was the last to work with W2k. Interesting that it is working for you.

(Hmmm... wonder if I still have my W2K vmware image....)

Okay you are right, it does appear that 4.63 at least runs on W2k... here is my results of just doing a simple kix32 /?

4.53, works
4.60, works
4.61, works
4.62, broke - is not a valid Win32 application
4.63, works

Keep in mind, I didn't run a script, but it is at least positive to see it running again.

Ah, now that makes sense. We never upgraded to 4.62 so never saw that it had broken. We will probably skip straight from 4.61 to 4.63 (or whatever version ends up reporting Windows Server 2012 correctly via @ProductType).

Thanks for the support,
Steve.

Hey guys... New company, new scripts. Noticed that the downloads page doesn't have the latest release (had to come here).

Can someone update?

Kix32.exe does not rely on dlls. The com dll and win9x dlls are still around somewhere. They just haven't been updated recently.
